Unmade sequel to the Evil Dead remake was set to bring back Bruce Campbell

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Yesterday we reported on Fede Alvarez – director of the EVIL DEAD remake – departing the long-gestating LABYRINTH sequel. Well, that scoop came from Bloody-Disgusting's BOO CREW PODCAST, where they were interviewing the director on a variety of topics. One of those topics that was inevitably brought up was his involvement with the aforementioned EVIL DEAD remake. This eventually led to the reveal that – when planning for a sequel – Alvarez was intent on bringing back Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, reprising his role as the iconic Ash Williams, and having him team-up with the remake's protagonist Mia (played by Jane Levy).

However, it was not meant to be, as he explained:

We started writing a sequel [right away] – thinking about what the sequel is going to be. We all agreed it was going to happen. Rodo [Sayagues] and I started thinking about it. We had the full story and then basically, it was strange…the whole intention was to do that, to team [Ash and Mia] up. That was always the goal, but I think Sam had different goals. Sam wanted to have Bruce back for the TV show that came out a few years after that. It was complex to make the movie at the time and whatever mythology we were going to create with them, and it would have been complicated for the show because Sam had his own ideas of what would happen to Ash, and he wanted to tell that story…So that’s why…it [ended up] not happening

He went on to reveal that he even toyed with the idea of making Mia and Ash related, but obviously that didn't happen once the project stalled. Meanwhile, Alvarez is currently directing the zombie road trip movie 16 STATES.

So what do you guys think? Any fans of the EVIL DEAD remake? And would you have liked to have seen a Mia/Ash team-up? Either way, sound off below!
