UPDATED with a tweet from Guillermo below!

Although star Ron Perlman has remained enthusiastic about the idea of once again donning the makeup of heroic demon Hellboy, the chances of HELLBOY 3 ever happening have long seemed to be hovering somewhere between slim and none. Perlman, HELLBOY and HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY writer/director Guillermo del Toro, and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola have all said at various points that a HELLBOY 3 would probably never happen.

Fans shouldn't get their hopes up just yet, but it appears that del Toro is setting his sights on trying to push HELLBOY 3 out of development hell. Yesterday, the filmmaker posted an "informal poll" on his Twitter page asking simply "Hellboy III". The possible answers: "Yes" and "Hell, yes". If the poll received more than 100,000 votes in 24 hours, del Toro said he would have a sit-down with Perlman and Mignola.

Well over 100,000 votes were cast in that poll, and del Toro is sticking to his word. He is getting together with Perlman and Mignola to talk HELLBOY 3. "No guarantee but we will discuss. Wish us luck!!"

In the past, del Toro has said that his idea for the third film was

…to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being."

HELLBOY 3 may never happen, but it's good to know that the creative forces behind the HELLBOY films will soon be having a meeting of the minds. For all the fans out there hoping to see another sequel get made, I wish del Toro, Mignola, and Perlman the best of luck with their sit-down.
