If you thought the high school angst of teen love involving vampires and whatnot was going to stop at TWILIGHT, then you were wrong. Dead wrong. Because it looks like some teenage vampire tale is coming at ya on the small screen now, thanks to the CW.
According to Variety, the CW picked up a pilot based on the L.J. Smith book series VAMPIRE DIARIES, with plans on going on full production on the show this fall. Tell me if you’ve heard this before: VAMPIRE DIARIES revolves around a young woman whose torn between two vampire brothers. The brothers — one good, one evil — are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.
Kinda sorta but not really sounds like TWILIGHT, right? Except diaries was published back in 1993… so go figure. But wait, it gets better. DAWSON’S CREEK writer and producer Kevin Williamson, who also wrote a little movie called SCREAM and a few other horror hits from the mid-90s, will be on board as executive producer of the show… as well as one of the writers!
A part of me is excited for this to simply see if Williamson has sharpened his writing chops over the last 10 years or so, and whether he’ll give us something that’s full of pop culture references, though in a way that’s fresh and cool and hip… like he did in the 90s. Hey–it could happen, right?
No word on who will star or any of that business, just that it’s on as a series… so watch for VAMPIRE DIARIES on the CW soon… I’m guessing this fall.
But will it be as hip as BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? Hmmmm.
