Vent: The Tourist’s Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck signs on for psychological thriller

Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck, the director of the 2006 German thriller The Lives of Others, the 2010 Johnny Depp / Angelina Jolie film The Tourist, and the 2018 German romantic drama Never Look Away, has signed on to direct the psychological thriller Vent for Alcon Entertainment. Scripted by Steven Karczynski, whose only previous credit is a 1999 Wonderful World of Disney TV movie, Vent will tell the story of

a paranoid young man who believes a kidnapping victim is tapping messages to him through his apartment building air vent.

Which sounds like an interesting set-up for some thrills.

Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are producing Vent with Karczynski and David Prior.

Kosove and Johnson provided the following statement to Deadline:

The vision behind Vent is unique and thrilling, and between Steven Karczynski’s incredible writing, and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s ability to bring such films to life, we are thrilled to be a part of bringing this story to screens.”

The Tourist wasn’t exactly well received… and it has been over ten years since I watched it, so I honestly have no memory of it. Our own Chris Bumbray gave the film a 5/10 review back in the day. Donnersmarck’s German films, on the other hand, have earned him a lot of positive attention. He won the BAFTA for The Lives of Others, while Never Look Away was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. Hopefully this will at least end up landing somewhere between 5/10 and an Oscar nomination – but if Donnersmarck does direct Vent to an Oscar nomination, that would be very cool.
