Verhoeven’s Paperboy

JoBloJoBlo

Manic Dutchman Paul Verhoeven took a lengthy break after HOLLOW MAN before returning with the acclaimed WWII thriller BLACK BOOK (ZWARTBOEK), and now he’s getting back into the swing with a killer project.

Literally — it’s about a killer. Verhoeven is reportedly looking at THE PAPERBOY as his next movie. Sadly not an adaptation of the classic isometric arcade game (it had handlebars!), the movie is based on Pete Dexter’s novel about journalists in 1960s Florida investigating the murder of a sheriff.

Verhoeven, who rose to prominence on the superviolence of sci-fi fare like ROBOCOP and TOTAL RECALL before switching to sex with BASIC INSTINCT and SHOWGIRLS (and fortunately back to carnage with STARSHIP TROOPERS), has also been circling THE WINTER QUEEN and a couple of other projects. Looks like he’ll deliver PAPERBOY first.
