The Red Spot, Aliens & More: Scary Studies Looks at Spiders in Horror

Last Updated on November 18, 2021

The latest exclusive series to debut on our JoBlo Horror Videos channel (check it out and subscribe!) is SCARY STUDIES, written and narrated by Cody Meirick, director of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark documentary SCARY STORIES, which can be found on VOD, DVD, and Amazon Prime.

With SCARY STUDIES, Meirick will “delve into the stories, the films, and the meanings behind the scary stories we tell ourselves.”

The first episode’s focus is on “Spiders in Horror“.

Animals are commonly used in horror for the theme of transformation. And spiders are a particularly fascinating entry point. One spidery image that seems to occur again and again has a long history in urban legend. And that is the image of spiders pouring from a person’s skin. Let’s explore that!

Alvin Schwartz told a very popular version of the “spiders hatching in a person’s skin” urban legend in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and a version of that story, The Red Spot, made it into the SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK film. So this is the perfect way to get SCARY STUDIES started.
