Remember last month, when we told you about Warner Bros. pegging screenwriter Oren Uziel to pen a screenplay for a third MORTAL KOMBAT film, which would be a reboot for the dead franchise. Well it seems we may be waiting a while until we’re able to see the legendary tournament again.
According to Variety Warner Bros. have just entered a legal battle with Threshold Entertainment over an alleged breach of contract issue involving the new MORTAL KOMBAT film. Threshold are accusing Warner Bros. of “failing to cooperate and respond to Threshold and seeking to cut out Threshold,” according to the suit filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Where is all this coming from? Well the guys over at The Wrap have thrown together a little history lesson concerning Warner, Threshold, Midway Games and MORTAL KOMBAT…. So allow me to school you a bit.
You see back in the early 90s Threshold and Midway entered into an agreement with each other to bring MORTAL KOMBAT into other forms of media including films. Two films and various other media entries later and Midway hit bankruptcy and were forced to sell. Warner Bros., being the opportunists they are, soared in and scooped up the rights to all of Midway’s library, which includes MORTAL KOMBAT. Still with me? So obviously Threshold has seen zilch on this new MORTAL KOMBAT production so they’re looking for their movie check!
There’s actually a bit more backstory to the whole Threshold-Midway-Warner fiasco. This lawsuit will actually be the third one filed by Threshold involving MORTAL KOMBAT, the first two coming in 2006 and 2008 against Warner subsidiary New Line over accounting for 1995’s MORTAL KOMBAT. The Wrap are also telling us that Threshold and Midway entered into a seperate deal back in 2006 to make a third KOMBAT film. Oh what a wicked web we weave…
