Fangoria had a chance to catch up with director Anthony Hickox about a number of projects, including details on the DVD release of his film SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE IN RETREAT. He also had a chance to chat up the possible remake of his 1988 flick WAXWORK, starring Zach Galligan and Deborah Foreman.
Truth be told, I’ve never seen WAXWORK, but it has a premise and a poster to make me wish I had! Check it out: A waxwork museum comes to town, and a mysterious man invites some teens to come to a special showing at midnight. Once inside, while viewing different exhibits, the scenes come alive and the viewer is sucked into the story being portrayed.
What’s not to love here? Hickox says WAXWORK may end up being slapped up on the remake chopping block like so many other horror movies from the 80s… The guy who owns the rights to it is dying to remake it, but he doesn’t get along with one of the other producers from the original. However, I’m sure they will work something out. If they do that, it still needs to be campy—and the mummy would have to move a lot faster than it did in mine!
I’m glad it may be a while before the remake is ever made, if for no other reason than to give me some extra time to check out the original WAXWORK on DVD! Then (and only then) will I be able to decide whether a remake is justified or totally unnecessary.
