Sure, this isn't the first time that Jamie Lee Curtis has returned to her role of Laurie Strode since John Carpenter's 1978 original, but her appearance in Danny McBride and David Gordon Green's upcoming HALLOWEEN feels quite special, and it turns out that we owe our thanks to her "unofficial godson," Jake Gyllenhaal.
While speaking with Variety, Jamie Lee Curtis said that Jake Gyllenhaal tracked her down while she was on vacation in the mountains with her husband in order to sing the praises of David Gordon Green, who had he recently worked with on STRONGER. Gyllenhaal called that experience the greatest of his professional career and urged Curtis to take Green's call regarding the HALLOWEEN project. Thankfully, Jamie Lee Curtis did just that and the pair apparently hit it off immediatly, with Curtis even saying that Green reminded her of John Carpenter.
They’re both laid back and don’t take themselves too seriously.
There were nine more films in the HALLOWEEN franchise following the release of the first, including Rob Zombie's reboot films, but the upcoming sequel will ignore all of them. "We shed all of that other stuff and just went back to what made the original so great," said Curtis. "John [Carpenter] didn’t write most of those films, so it was just all these new people making up stories. But with this one, we just literally cut the line. Whether or not people loved or hated those stories has no relevance to this movie." The actress promised that the upcoming film will prove itself worthy, "it's powerful. It's old-school. It's terrifying." It certainly seems that Curtis enjoyed her time on HALLOWEEN more than her last time starring alongside Michael Myers in HALLOWEEN H2O (we won't count HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION), which she admitted was disappointing.
‘H20’ started out with best intentions, but it ended up being a money gig. The film had some good things in it. It talked about alcoholism and trauma, but I ended up really doing it for the paycheck.
HALLOWEEN will hit theaters on October 19, 2018, and if it's as good as I'm hoping it will be, I'll be sending Jake Gyllenhaal a thank you card.
