Suicide Squad stays on top!
For a second weekend, DC's supervillains took control of the box office and kept SUICIDE SQUAD at #1 with an estimated $43.7 million!
That represents a 67% loss of business from the movie's record-breaking opening weekend, but the team of expendable bad guys still managed to set another record for biggest second weekend in August (inching past the $42.1 million second weekend of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in 2014).
As a point of reference, the second-weekend drops for this year's other big comic book movies: 69% for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, 65% for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, 59% for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and 57% for DEADPOOL.
Even with a 67% drop, SUICIDE SQUAD managed to fight off the new competitors and has an impressive 10-day domestic total of $222.8 million, and a worldwide total of $465 million.
Opening in second place was SAUSAGE PARTY with $33.6 million. The new R-rated animated comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Golberg reportedly cost only $19 million to produce, and had a stronger start than the $21.7 million first weekend of Rogen's human-form comedy NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING in May. Critics laughed along with the lewd food with an 82% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third was the live-action version of Disney's PETE'S DRAGON with an opening of $21.5 million. The update of the studio's 1977 fairy tale didn't make quite the same impression as this summer's hit remake of THE JUNGLE BOOK (although PETE'S DRAGON was a relatively cheap $65 million to make compared to the $175 reported cost of Mowgli's digitally created world). Critics enjoyed their time with the boy and his large green friend with 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
JASON BOURNE slipped down to fourth place with $13.6 million as the Matt Damon thriller passed the domestic totals of THE BOURNE IDENTITY ($121.6 million) and spinoff THE BOURNE LEGACY ($113.2 million). Damon's fourth time as the amnesiac spy has a worldwide total of $246.2 million.
The R-rated comedy BAD MOMS was in fifth with $11.4 million, and is up to a solid $71.4 million domestic total on a reported cost of $20 million. In sixth was the animated family feature THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS with $8.8 million as it nears a worldwide total of $600 million. STAR TREK BEYOND was in seventh with $6.8 million for a domestic total of $139.6 million after four weekends in theaters.
The new Meryl Streep comedy-drama FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS opened in eighth place with $6.5 million (on about 1500 screens). The biopic of the questionably talented socialite-turned-opera singer cost a reported $19 million and was applauded by critics with an 86% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Appropriately in ninth was NINE LIVES with $3.5 million, a 44% drop from last week's opening for the Kevin Spacey cat comedy. The horror movie LIGHTS OUT finished up the list with $3.2 million and a domestic total of $61 million on a $5 million cost.
Outside the chart, ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE disappeared with the reboot of GHOSTBUSTERS and the thriller NERVE. In limited release, the critically acclaimed Chris Pine/Ben Foster/Jeff Bridges modern Western HELL OR HIGH WATER had a decent $18k per-screen average at 32 locations.
Next weekend brings the update of historical epic BEN-HUR from WANTED director Timur Bekmambetov, the stop-motion animated KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS from studio Laika (CORALINE), and the R-rated Jonah Hill/Miles Teller comedy WAR DOGS from THE HANGOVER series director Todd Phillips.
