It was a nail-biter, but in the end, it looks like Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going to fall just short of Avengers: Endgame’s all-time box office opening record. While it managed to set an opening-day record, according to early box office estimates, the grand total for Spider-Man: Brand New Day sits at $355 million, compared to Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million. However, it should be noted that by the time the official numbers are tallied, Brand New Day could still eke out a win. Whatever the case, though, Spider-Man’s opening-weekend performance was through the roof and wildly beyond anyone’s expectations—including our own.
Tom Holland might as well be declared the box office king of the summer, with him occupying not only the top two spots at the box office this weekend, with The Odyssey coming in at number two, but also likely starring in the two highest-grossing movies of the summer. It’s unlikely that anything else opening in the next month will pose a real threat to either film.
Spider-Man gives Marvel a massive box office victory
Brand New Day’s box office performance certainly has the executives at Marvel breathing a sigh of relief, with the box office for every movie other than Deadpool & Wolverine having been somewhat underwhelming over the last few years. With Avengers: Doomsday opening on December 18th, they need all the box office goodwill they can muster.
That said, Spider-Man has always been a safe bet at the box office, with none of the live-action films having made less than $700 million worldwide. Still, Brand New Day’s performance is mind-blowing, with it possible that the movie will pass the $2 billion mark worldwide by the end of its run.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is looking at a $51 million weekend, bringing it past $395 million domestically. It is now Christopher Nolan’s third-highest-grossing movie of all time. So far, Toy Story 5, which came in third at the box office this weekend with $6.2 million, is the year’s top-grossing movie, but both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day will likely pass its $461 million haul in a matter of weeks—perhaps days in the case of Brand New Day.
Minions & Monsters overtakes Moana
Minions & Monsters was able to overtake Moana, grossing $5.6 million against Moana’s $5.3 million. Minions & Monsters’ box office total now stands at $168.1 million, well short of the franchise’s usual standards but still enough for it to turn a nice profit. Moana has made $114.7 million so far—a disastrous result for a movie that cost around $250 million—making it the year’s biggest flop so far.
Hadestown: The Musical, the filmed version of the stage production, was held over beyond its initial limited run, adding another $2 million to its strong $18.2 million total. Olivia Wilde’s The Invite made another $2 million, bringing it to a solid $22.6 million total. It’s a decent-sized indie hit, but not quite the breakout that Materialists was last year, with that film making $36.5 million domestically.
Another Olivia Wilde movie, I Want Your Sex, had an abysmal $570,000 opening, while Evil Dead Burn began wrapping up its run with $527,000 and a $31.2 million total—a disappointing result for the franchise, although it will turn a profit once foreign grosses are factored in. The top 10 was rounded out by Obsession, which made $450,000 for an amazing domestic total of $262.7 million.
Next weekend will be a quiet one, making it clear that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will have an easy road to a huge second weekend—possibly north of $200 million. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
