Werewolf by Night: Laura Donnelly would leap at the chance to work on a follow-up

Last month, Marvel and Disney+ released the very cool creature feature Halloween special Werewolf by Night (you can read our 8/10 review HERE). So far, there hasn’t been any word about when the characters introduced in that special – titular werewolf Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), monster hunter’s daughter Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), and swamp monster Man-Thing – will be returning in any future movies, specials, or series. But during an interview with The Wrap, Donnelly was enthusiastic about the idea of returning for a follow-up.

Donnelly said, “The thing that I love about this particular story for Elsa is that we get such a sense that we’re only at the beginning of something for her; she’s not introduced as the character that we know from the comics. It’s her pre-that or maybe she has been that and something has happened — we don’t know. And so it does feel like it’s only this little taster of many, many layers that are there underneath and a huge backstory. Any opportunity to explore [a follow-up], I would leap at, and I would also love to explore that relationship between Elsa and Jack as well. That’s just one that is just touched on and you see the beginning of something blossoming and we don’t know what that is. And I love working with Gael. I would be very, very happy to — just call me.“

Composer Michael Giacchino directed Werewolf by Night, working from a script by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. The special has the following synopsis:

On a dark and somber night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster.

Giacchino previously directed the short film Monster Challenge and an episode of the animated series Star Trek: Short Treks. He worked with Marvel on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Speaking with Empire, Giacchino described Werewolf by Night as a “love letter to monsters and the humanity behind them”.
