Westworld, ho! Again.

JoBloJoBlo

A remake of the 1973 sci-fi flick WESTWORLD has been in the works for so long, I almost expect an actual robot-populated pleasure park to be a reality before the movie.

The update has yet another new writer attached — Billy Ray, who directed BREACH and SHATTERED GLASS. He’s not, however, planning to direct the theme park gone wrong (the one that’s not JURASSIC PARK), preferring to avoid the pressure of such an undoubtedly huge-budget project. Ray also adds: “I love the basic idea of the movie, which is that our amusements can kill us.” He is, obviously, excluding sex, booze, drugs, illegal street racing, and hunting Jean-Claude Van Damme for sport.

The original leisure suit-filled flick, written and directed by Michael Crichton, revolved around a high-tech resort filled with play-acting robots (from all periods, not just gunslingers who look like Yul Brynner). But things eventually go haywire, causing a relentless short-circuited cowboy to hunt guests through the facility. Uberproducer Joel Silver has long been trying to get the Warner Bros. remake soldered together, with everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Tarsem (THE CELL) to Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM) attached in the past.
