Personal take on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
I saw The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at my local theater on Wednesday night. First and foremost, my crowd was awesome. Many of the people attending the film came dressed in Nintendo finery, carrying Luma plushies, and opting for popcorn from the overpriced Yoshi popcorn bucket at the concession stand. As for the movie itself, I had fun with it. It’s exactly what I expected, more or less. It’s a bright, colorful pile of Nintendo barf aimed at children with plenty of nostalgia for old heads. Anyone saying there’s nothing in this movie for adults is either misinformed or has never touched a Mario game in their sad lives. The soundtrack alone is enough to send elder millennials into a time warp, and the number of times my crowd re-enacted the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme is endless. I got exactly what I paid for. An opportunity to shut my brain off and live inside a famed video game franchise for an hour and change. The film is SUPER light on story, and doesn’t include anything close to emotional resonance, but it looks spectacular, made me laugh, and kept me entertained from beginning to end. That’s about all I want or expect from a Nintendo-themed animated film. When the Legend of Zelda movie comes out, I’ll be looking for more. But for now, this will do just fine.
