Chris Claremont is not only the creator of the original comic storyline that serves as the basis for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST but he is also the creator of fan favorite character Gambit. Gambit has been hot news recently as Channing Tatum has confirmed meetings regarding playing the character in a future solo movie. The Internet did not respond kindly to the news, but what does the man who created Gambit think?
In an interview with Blastr Claremont shared his thoughts on Tatum as well as who he envisioned taking the role on in the past.
In those terms, I would think Channing would be a wonderful choice…whether that means, in two or three years, some other cool guy might come along. There’s a part of me that thinks, ‘Hm, 20 years ago, I might have thought Woody Harrelson.’ To me, it’s a matter of finding who bonds best with the role, in the same way that Hugh has defined Wolverine for everybody in the cinematic audience.
Woody Harrelson would have made a very interesting Gambit and definitely outside of the expected casting for the role. But, that goes to show that when you try to match a drawn character to a physical specimen you often overlook who brings the best acting to the part. Taylor Kitsch was cast as Gambit because the guy was expected to hit it huge as a Hollywood star. Here we are years later and where is Kitsch?
By the time a Gambit movie gets made, Tatum may not be the hot guy anymore. So that leaves the question: who should play Gambit?
