Who wants Wolfman?

We feel your pain Benicio (right)… we really do. The other day, Eric broke the huge news that WOLF MAN director Mark Romanek left the project. This was shattering considering shooting was slated to start this February.

Immediately the studio jumped to the open market to find a man worthy enough to fill Romanek’s shoes. And by worthy I mean someone who can do their best without any say in the script.

Said script, written by Andrew Kevin Walker, is under key and lock and cannot be revised at all, because of some kind of strike. So whomever hops on as director MUST be happy with the script. They simply don’t have a choice in the matter, so I’m sure this makes the process much more fun.

Immediately names were being tossed around, as Eric pointed out a day later. The top three conteders were said to be Breck Eisner, Matt Reeves, and .. well… Brett Ratner.

Well according to The Hollywood Reporter, a whole mess of names have been thrown into consideration. Those names are: Frank Darabont, James Mangold, Joe Johnston, Bill Condon, and Martin Campbell.

Looks like they’re going for some big names here. Most have had their fair share of the genre and would all probably bring justice to THE WOLF MAN (minus Ratner of course.).

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Martin Campbell dropped out of the running and that star Benicio Del Toro is known for being very picky when it comes to roles and directors, so he may play a huge part in who gets the gig.

They also report… sadly… that Ratner is said to be in the lead right now, based solely on the fact that he has experience in taking over directing duties from someone else. That’s just insane. All of those directors are extremely capable directors whom I’m sure would have no problem taking over a project.

Mind you, I’m not jumping on the band wagon either. Stone me if you must, but I enjoy Ratner’s films, I find them entertaining… but a film like THE WOLF MAN? That’s not Ratner at all. Personally I’m pulling for Darabont.

Apparently the studio should have a director named by next week and now has the film at a March start date. As always, we’ll keep you updated.
