“Jeepers Creepers, he’s got Justin Long’s peepers!” Regardless of what anyone says, I feel that the first JEEPERS CREEPERS was a landmark in horror. A monster/slasher that was intense, well-written, gory, fun, and featured a peppy, vintage song (I don’t know why, but oldies seem to play well in horror).
JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 had its moments, but basically failed to live up to its predecessor. However, one of the biggest postives of JC2 had to be Mr. Ray Wise (above). Playing a widowed father who loses his son to that bat-out-of-hell, Wise was the ideal embodiment of the Creeper’s “Ahab”*, an aspect that was sorely missing from JC1.
Now we have JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 coming our way and thankfully, Wise will be reprising his role! In fact, the man just got through his first table read for JC3 and revealed some cool tidbits about the project. First, the film will be a combination of both the first films, and characters from both will be making appearances, albeit 23 years older. Hell yeah! Bring ’em back! Second, we will be seeing a lot more of the Creeper’s lair. I’m sure it will be very cozy!
CREEPERS 3 is once again written and directed by Victor Salva and will possibly begin shooting some time in January.
*note: The term “Ahab” was coined in the film BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON and is used to describe a slaher’s nemesis; someone who will stop at nothing to bring the bad guy down just like Captain Ahab in MOBY DICK. The best example of a true “Ahab” is Sam Loomis played by Donald Pleasance in HALLOWEEN.
