Wonder Woman 1984 moves to a Summer 2020 release

After officially being slated for a December 13, 2019 release , then moving to November 1, 2019 as a way of avoiding the December 20, 2019 bow for Disney's STAR WARS: Episode IX, Warner Bros. has shifted the premiere date for WONDER WOMAN 1984 yet again. This afternoon, the warrior princess of Themyscira herself, Gal Gadot, announced via Twitter that the highly anticipated sequel will now arrive on June 5, 2020.

Leading the charge as director of WONDER WOMAN 1984 is MONSTER and WONDER WOMAN helmer Patty Jenkins, whose 2017 Amazonian adventure shattered both fan and box office expetations by delivering what many consider to be the best film of the DCEU to date. For the sequel, Gadot will of course return as Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman, with Chris Pine once again assuming the role of Steve Trevor. Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright are also expected to grace the screen as Hippolyta and Antiope, respectively. Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal (KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, GAME OF THRONES) and BRIDESMAIDS actress Kristen Wiig are being added to the mix. While the name of Pascal's character has yet to be revealed, we know that Wiig will arrive as Barbara Minerva a.k.a. Cheetah. In the comics, Dr. Barbara Minerva is a British archaeologist who gains special powers after going on a trip to Africa.

While some fans will undoubtedly be upset that they'll have to wait a bit longer to see Diana back in action, the move does allow Jenkins to apply more polish to the film, which is always a plus – especially when crafting a sequel to one of the highest grossing films of all time. Plus, we've still got the release of Jason Momoa's AQUAMAN on December 14th to tide us over. Fear not, my friends, I've got a sneaking suspicion that DC is up to something major with all of these release date switcharoos they've been pulling lately. My fingers are officially crossed that their master plan yeilds positive results. I'd shout "Excelsior," but that's Marvel's call to arms.
