Writer boards Oldboy

I’m still in shock at the prospect of Steven Spielberg and Will Smith collaborating on the upcoming remake of Park Chan-wook’s OLDBOY. A part of me wants to go screaming through the streets, letting the world know what a bad idea this is, the duo are not dark enough to pull this off, et cetra, et cetra. But there’s another part of me that’s secretly stoked at the idea, as I generally like their movies and feel that if anyone is going to remake OLDBOY, it might as well be these two.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith himself has brought writer Mark Protosevich on board to write the remake–Protosevich was the dude behind the first draft of Smith’s I AM LEGEND. Unfortunately for us, his draft wasn’t really seen in the final version of LEGEND, so he may just be the right dude for the job–apparently it was his draft of LEGEND that got Smith excited for the project in the first place.

Now that they have a writer on board, it is likely that the remake will be moving forward with both Spielberg and Smith attached. Yup folks, it looks like it’s more than just rumors, interest, or speculation, but the real thing… but I think I’ll just wait until filming starts until I believe it for sure.

Stick around for more on the OLDBOY remake as we hear it!
