You’ll be able to raise your very own Porg with ILMxLAB’s Project Porg

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Much like the Ewoks of STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI, the Porgs of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI have inspired millions of fans to either fall in love with them or call for their preferably gruesome demise. The puffin-like species reside on Ahch-To, the remote planet where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) lived during his self-imposed exile, but you'll be able to bring a family of Porg's into your very own home with Project Porg, a new mixed-reality experience from ILMxLAB for the Magic Leap One, which is unfortunately only available in an expensive Creator Edition.

Here's a video from ILMxLAB which details the experience, which is probably about as close as most of us will actually get to experiencing it.

Why Porgs? Well, the answer was pretty obvious. "We’ve tried a surprisingly large variety of different things, characters, cinematic tie-ins and scale. Some worked for various reasons and really didn’t work for others," Michael Koperwas, ILMxLAB’s mixed reality supervisor, told StarWars.com. "If you want to do something huge, you can do it, but you need a really big space and not everyone has that. If you want to do something human-sized, it doesn’t come across as well to everybody. Really small things almost instantly give you this intimate feeling. They’re things you want to take care of, things you’re not afraid to approach. (Porgs) can have a mind of their own, they can have their own opinions and desires. You can project a lot of emotion onto them and they’re just, they’re just really cute and mischievous."

Seeing as how there was a Porg or two on the Millennium Falcon when Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Chewbacca left Ahch-To in THE LAST JEDI, it's likely that we may see the cuddly critters once again in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX on December 20, 2019.
