Mahershala Ali in action mode
While Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie suffered some delays, the Academy Award winner gets to be in action mode in the moody drama Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The film comes from the revamped Orion Pictures, which is now under the umbrella of Amazon MGM Studios, and the new trailer has just been released for your viewing. Or should I say the teaser? Since the trailer for this film runs for less than a minute. However, the dialogue and brooding atmosphere has already captured my attention and when Ali wields his weapon and fights off baddies, you can’t help but wonder if he’s channeling a bit of Blade in there.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother
Orion Pictures distributes the film, which is a production from Two & Two Pictures. Joining Ali in the cast is John Cho, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, and Giancarlo Esposito. The film also stars Adia and Jaheel Kamara.
The official plot synopsis from Orion reads,
“From writer-director Bassam Tariq, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother stars Mahershala Ali as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman who struggles to balance work, faith and fatherhood. When his wife dies, he embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, confronting the forces closing in around him – and the beliefs threatening to unravel within.”
Bassam Tariq writes and directs Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Tariq is known for collaborating with Riz Ahmed on a couple of projects — Mogul Mowgli and the Prime Original series Bait. Tariq also produces with Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari joining him. Brian O’Neill is an executive producer on the film.
What about Blade?
Meanwhile, Ali’s Blade has stalled several times and he is understandably frustrated about the situation. Marvel head Kevin Feige has said that the studio has to recover from over-expansion, and Blade was a project that stalled out in the process. “We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on [Ali] and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique. It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great.’ And it wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time. We didn’t feel like, as we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production. We didn’t feel confident that we could do that on Blade, and we didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us.“
