Way back in November I told you how writer/director Kevin Munroe was looking to bring the world of EL ZOMBO to the big screen. Munroe’s the mind behind the recent TMNT flick and ZOMBO is a comic series from Dark Horse.

Well nothing was even close to official back in November. That was just Munroe tossing some ideas around. But those ideas came to fruition and we’re going to have an EL ZOMBO flick heading our way! We scored a press release today straight from producer Robert Sanchez himself. Here’s the goods!

The producing team of Sanchez, Chris Patton, and Kevin Munroe, under the name Death Ray Films will be teaming with Dark Horse comics to bring EL ZOMBO FANTASMA to life. The comic was created by Munroe and David Wilkins and made it’s debut in 2005. Death Ray Films and Maya Entertainement will be working on an animiated series for EL ZOMBO once the live-action film is out of the way. Looks like they’re banking on this one! EL ZOMBO is set to have a slew of producers so here’s the rundown: Munroe will write, direct, and co-produce while Sanchez, Patton, and Wilkins produce. Jose Martinez and Kellvin Chavez will produce with Moctesuma Esparza executive producing for Maya Entertainement whil Mike Richardson executive produces for Dark Horse.

The film will follow the mysterious murder of the world’s most notorious Mexican wrestler who bargains his way out of an eternity of fiery damnation by returning to Los Angeles to play guardian angel to a troublesome teen, Belisa Montoya. He soon discovers that the teen is not what she seems and that their fates have been intertwined for centuries.

Munroe had the following to say in the press release: “Zombo started years ago as just a geeky idea between two friends who worked at the same video game company. But Dave and I always knew that the property had a broader appeal than just its publishing roots, and now we’ll see it finally reach an entirely new audience. I’m thrilled to be a part of creating this new breed of superhero for the big screen.”

Sanchez adds: “As a Cuban-American in this industry, I see El Zombo as a unique property that will not only showcase Latinos but also appeal to all audiences. It has action, romance, redemption and wrestling, it’s a Latin Hellboy. It’s the prefect date movie!” Well that’s some interesting selling points! It’s hard to imagine a flick that would fall into that category but lets hope Sanchez is right! Nothing like bringing your girl to watch an undead Mexican wrestler and she enjoys it! Now that would be some accomplishment.

Chavez also had something to say about ZOMBO: “El Zombo is an extremely cool superhero and it’s tremendous, pile-driving fun. As a fan of wrestling, I used to watch ‘Santo, el Enmascarado de Plata’ one of the most famous Mexican free wrestlers, so I was excited by this project.”

And lastly Jose Matrinez Jr. issued a statement for Maya Entertainment: “We are excited to work with Death Ray and Dark Horse on El Zombo as it furthers our goal of bringing Latino themes and Latino talent to the commercial market. We plan to blow this out in a big way so that everyone can enjoy this awesome idea.”

So there you have it! A lot to swallow right? Well we’re not done! Along with the press release we also have a teaser poster already! Check that out below! Just click through to check out a much larger shot. Not a bad teaser at all. Keep it here as we await more news on EL ZOMBO!
