While his TERMINATOR series trundles onward without him, director James Cameron is tirelessly working on his megabudget sci-fi epic AVATAR.
While he's still not spilling much about the story itself or the world he created for it, Cameron does love to discuss the new technology he's constructed for this (and future) projects. And as has been mentioned, his spiffy new 3-D ultra-camera sounds like it has the potential to drastically change filmmaking. "The way we developed the performance-capture workflow on 'Avatar" is we have our virtual camera, which allows me, in real time, to hold a camera -- it's really a monitor -- in my hands and point it at the actors and see them as their CG characters," Cameron said.
"Once we've laid down a take, the take exists in the digital asset management system. It can be accessed at any time. Long after the actors have gone home, I'm still out there with the virtual camera, shooting coverage on the scene. I just have to play the take back. I can do the close-up, the wide shot ... I can even move them around on a limited basis. We relight it. We do all kinds of things."
It remains to be seen how convincing these "synthespians" will appear when digitally projected on theater screens, but it does have the spooky underlying implication that human actors may not be entirely necessary for the duration of filming at some point in the future. Cameron does insist that the story comes first, although the finished product is expected to be approximately 60% CGI and 40% live-action. Read more about his crazy next-gen tech RIGHT HERE.
The movie, which will be arrives in December 2009 and involves a disabled war veteran who travels to an alien world and gets into a spot of trouble with the locals.
Extra Tidbit:
The movie reportedly features sexy blue alien chicks with prehensile tails. I'd pay to see that even if Albert Pyun directed it.

IT;S CAMERON, FOLKS...
the guy gave us the awesome sequel to aliens...terminator...etc, it wont be bad. as for 3-d being "gimmicky", i gotta admit, beowulf in 3d was amazing to me, it was a HUGE difference from the old 3d imho...modern technology rules, capabilities are upped, hd will be the norm...all in all, a 3d james cameron film with state of the art tek will rock, have no doubt about it. |

ALREADY BEEN DONE
Wow LOTR did this for the troll scene (among others)same concept the digital worlds already existed through the camera the actors would do there part and then it was saved he could then go in a re-shoot the scenes without them. So this groundbreaking movie is using 10 year old technology? Notice they both worked with WETA on this. |

I would definitely like to know more about this movie. So far there is very little to judge it by. But I'm sure Cameron won't disappoint us! |

Avatar will rip our brains apart in the best possible way. As for 3D being a gimmick, is it really any more of a gimmick than sound or color? We'll just be seeing the images closer to how we see everyday life, just like adding sound or color bought B&W closer to how we see the real world. |

C'MON MR. CAMERON, SELL US OR WE'LL LEAVE!
So far & I know this isn't coming out for a while, I'm betting 2010 not 2009. If he actually wants to get people excited we are gonna need a little more info or this will sink him just like "Titanic" would have if it had failed. I sure hope this is good, but like others have said, as of now 3D is a complete gimmick unless you're 10. Don't get me wrong I thought 3D was cool to when I saw that Michael Jackson movie at Disneyland when I was a kid. So far all the 3D well it simply sucks. It's great that it's 3D, but it looks 3D, sans Sucks. |

replacing actors with CG1? Somewhere, George Lucas is getting a boner. Wait... I already made that joke on another story. :)
I have high hopes that this will be cool. |

Totally agree with 3-D being a gimmick. Also, the overreliance on CGI has me a bit worried. No matter how good CG gets, it never looks as good as practical.
That being said, this IS a James Cameron movie, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. |
