Two months ago, ZOMBIELAND writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick spilled the beans that a sequel to that film appeared to be on track to reach theatres in time for the 10th anniversary next October. Since then we've heard a rumor about the sequel's script and even a rumor that the film had already been shot in secret. Now we have an official update to share.

Wernick said they hoped ZOMBIELAND 2 would be shooting in early 2019 for an October '19 release, and that's exactly what is now set to happen.

Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin have signed on to return for the sequel, and so has director Ruben Fleischer. Filming begins in January.

The story Reese and Wernick crafted for this long-awaited sequel has the following synopsis:

In ZOMBIELAND 2, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, the Zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

So the characters from ZOMBIELAND have managed to make it 10 years into the zombie apocalypse without any of them getting killed. They're handling their business a lot better than the folks on The Walking Dead.

Reese and Wernick will be executive producing the sequel, with Gavin Polone producing.

I would have been a lot more into the idea of a ZOMBIELAND 2 seven years ago than I am at this point, but it will be cool to see these characters again.
