Fede Alvarez talks Evil Dead sequel

Jul. 16, 2013by: Kevin Woods

With his EVIL DEAD remake hitting DVD and Blu-Ray today, director Fede Alvarez is already looking ahead to the inevitable sequel and recently spoke with Collider about his plans for a return to the gory goodness the first film deliverd.

Alvarez shared the the sequel is only in the 'discussion' phase, but that he has an idea of how the film should follow the first, stating...

We’re discussing.  We’re still talking with Sam (Raimi) about it and trying to figure out what we should do.  Maybe because I’m a child of the 80’s, but for me a sequel is a story that follows the previous one, and sometimes if you haven’t seen the original then you don’t understand the second one.  Like Back to the Future 2.  If you haven’t seen the first one, you’re not going to get anything out of Back to the Future 2.  So that’s kind of my ideal sequel – a movie that continues the story, takes one character and moves on, and moves forward with that character that survived with the first one.  That’s what I want to do.  But the reality of the industry today is that the sequel is just the same concept, but with a new bunch of characters.  That’s the reality of Final Destination or Saw.  Generally it’s a new bunch of characters and you play with the same concept again.  But I don’t think, personally, we should just get a new bunch of kids and throw them in the cabin and open the book again.  So that’s what we’re trying to- were just going back and forth about what is the reality of the market and what kind of film should we do.

Alvarez shared that the original team behind the 1981 cult classic as well as the remake (Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell) are still onboard for the sequel, but that it hasn't been determined if Alvarez will once again take the helm, sharing...

Of course.  It will be exactly the same people, but I’m not attached as a director right now.  Right now all I am is the writer.  That’s how I am involved with the film right now.

So it could still be quite some time before we hear about any movement on an EVIL DEAD sequel, but as always we'll keep you in the loop as we hear it.

EVIL DEAD hits DVD and Blu-Ray today. You can pick it up on DVD HERE or grab it on Blu HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Would you like to see Alvarez return to helm the sequel to EVIL DEAD?

I trust they'll come up with some good ideas for the sequel and depart from the same formula many horror franchise's are using right now and continue the story of Mia in a original way.

I say...

don't make a sequel at all. It was a good movie and exceeded my expectations. But let's stop doing the remakes and sequels to remakes, okay?

They shouldn't bring Ash in at all.

Because he should be in his own fourth film by now dammit!

I'd say make Mia returns to the same cabin where some dumb group of teens unintentionally unleashes the evil spirit once again. And by the end of the sequel, make Ash teams up with Mia for Evil Dead Remake 3.

Bring him in. Old Ash teaches the new chick how to fuck shit up. They can go metal hand shopping, or whatever.
