Poltergeist remake gets plot details and shoot date

May. 20, 2013by: Ryan Miller

Gil Kenan's upcoming remake of Tobe Hooper's 1981 classic POLTERGEIST is happening whether we want it to or not so read on folks for some new details! According to Bloody Disgusting, the upcoming remake will follow Eric Bowen and his family who, after he loses his job, relocates to a new town to start over. His daughter, Madison, is abducted, making him truly understand what’s important in life: family. In the new version, Eric’s wife, Amy, can communicate with the dead.

There will be another new character in the mix as well who will be Carrigan Burke, a television personality who hosts "Haunted House Cleaners". The supernatural doesn’t scare this guy. Dr. Brooke Powell is Carrigan’s ex-wife who is a parapsychologist at a local university. Her team investigates the supernatural events surrounding the disappearance of the Bowen girl.

Casting is currently underway and shooting is set to begin as early as September in Toronto, Canada. Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Roy Lee all produce with David Lindsay-Abaire listed at the main screenwriter although Juliet Snowden and Stiles White had previously worked on the script.

Well, that's that. Even though I'm usually optimistic when it comes to remakes I can't say that I'm too excited for this one. The original flick is, in my opinion, the perfect horror film and one that is still pretty damn scary to this day. We've been getting so many paranormal flicks these days that this upcoming remake is going to have a hard time finding its own unique voice in the genre and for that reason I think this one is going to have a pretty big hill to climb.

Extra Tidbit: Does this remake even stand a chance? Let us know!

This will suck like virtually all remakes suck. I'm not totally against rebooting a flick, but for me, the film has to need one in the first place. Classic films like this simply don't need to be retold. I'll save my money for original films that bring something new to the table.

The effects will be pure shit

This is going to suck. They will use crappy CG and it won't hold a candle against the original. The Evil Dead Remake sucked too.

Why....

Call it poltergeist? Sounds like they are obviously riding on the coat tails of its success. Sounds like Scary Movie 7 that is direct to DVD

with the addition of Burke....

doesnt it ALMOST sound like FRIGHT NIGHT with Ghosts????
instead of vampires next door... the ghosts are inside your house and Burke sounds like Roddy McDowell's character Peter Vincent except that he's not a horror host... he's a Ghost Hunter (now "Cleaner")
also what happened to Steve and Diane Freeling and the Freeling family??? this may as well be Poltergeist 4 since it features a totally different family... part of the charm was that the mother (JoBeth Williams) was a TOTAL sceptic...

It had to happen some day! We might as well imbrass it. When you start to get worried just look at the evil dead remake!

People like you, who lack any intelligence, are the reason why these remakes keep coming. Lock yourself in a dark room and don't go to the movies anymore.

Little harsh Masterdebator88? Nobody allowed to have an opinion? Personally I'll reserve judgement until I see a trailer. And even if it sucks the original Poltergeist won't be [link] as it will always exist and be loved. You can't take that from any classic movie no matter how many remakes or sequels are made.

I don't understand?

Why sully a classic with a remake when you can just as easily create a brand new haunted house movie???? The names of the characters, the location, and the basic premise all completely different, so why not just come up with a new title and go your own way???

this is pretty much a brand new movie with a new family ... much like Haunting in Connecticut 2 was a sequel in name only...
i dunno... part of me wants Jason Hawes from Ghost Hunters to be the Ghost Cleaner... hahaha...
