Marvel anime coming Aug. 26, 2008
Source: NY Times
by: Mike Sampson

Marvel Comics is continuing to stretch its brand worldwide in its attempt to become the worldwide leader in superheroes, announcing yesterday its plan to launch a group of anime series that will debut in Japan in 2010. Four Marvel superheroes will get the anime treatment though it's unclear which four they are (Iron Man and Spider-Man are confirmed). The series will be created by influential anime studio Madhouse who have created such fan faves as VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST and METROPOLIS. Taking a subtle dig at DC Comics and pseudo-anime DVD release BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT, Alex Yeh, COO at Madhouse, said, "Although they say, ‘I want Japanese anime,’ it’s not what they actually want. They want a hybrid between Japanese and Western animation," adding that Marvel will allow their creators "freedom to fly." This means that some of the hallowed origins of your favorite characters will be reimagined to reflect Japanese culture. The anime series will also be adapted into superhero manga and will also be available on Japanese cell phones. So far there are no plans to release here in the US (though you have to expect they'll eventually be exported). I'd love to get a look at some of the designs of these characters to see, visually, how they plan to adapt them. And kudos to Marvel for letting these talented artists have their way with the characters...

Extra Tidbit: This is not the first time Marvel attempted to break into the Japanese market: see the 1970s "Spider-Man" manga.

I dont know why people automatically assume all anime looks the same, just because they got a glipse of pokemon or yugioh on saturday morning kids wb. The anime industry is just as diverse as the film industry is (maybe even more). There are many different genres and many different styles. Seeing as how most of us can be categorized into the minority of "comic book geeks," I see no reason why people should be trivializing an entire medium based on the two seconds of badly translated and dubbed kiddy cartoons they saw while flipping channels.

Madhouse is a great studio, I cant wait to see how this turns out.

COOOOL...
This sounds like a good idea for Marvel and anime alike, the final product will be interesting to see since it'ss combine anime with western animation, they better export that sh*t to the US, I would really like to see the X-MEN get the anime treatment.

i thought we were past the whole "all anime looks the same" deal, but whatever, i cant wait to see what happens. and vdtdcut, good call on Kon, but they did do a live action Japanese Spider-man show, ......and he was a Japanese motorcycle racer who found a UFO and he piloted a giant robot (seriously)!!

I'm down for it as long as they get good writers and artists. I wouldn't mind seeing an interpretation of Spidey from a Japanese POV, Iron Man too. Just as long as it's well...good and not lame.

I just read the article, and it says one of Madhouse's main talents is Satoshi Kon...Holy shit. If he were to do any of these projects, that will become a must buy/import

EDIT: f I remember right, I read on IGN the Ghostbusters were planned to get the same treatment in Japan as well, but with the game delayed, that too may have been delayed.

I have nothing against the anime-style of doing things because I understand that it, too, is an artform...but I'm not a fan of the genre. True, I adore Gotham Knight to this day, but maybe it's because it wasn't fully anime. So personally, I'm not looking forward to this new venture by Marvel. Again, I'm not saying anime is bad...it's just not something I see that would blend well with Marvel's characters. And redefining the characters might not be such a bright idea.

I'll talk the wait and see approach. Though I love Vampire Hunter D and a LOT of anime....I'll need to see how far they take it.

BTW...Gotham Knight was awesome!

I think my geek heart just missed a beat.
So does that mean we get crossover's where Spiderman will do battle with Charmander or when Spiderman gets irate his facial feature's will be anatomically incorrect.
Hey it can happen...Wasnt there a Spawn/Ninja Turtle/Batman crossover at one time...Anything is possible.
