Cool Videos Exclusive: A tribute to the brilliant Shawshank Redemption score

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

There is a direct correlation between a great movie and a great soundtrack. Quentin Tarantino has made an artform out of using existing music to accent his films, but an original score can sometimes be as moving as the performances on screen. The score has become something more than just background and quite a few can be listened to on their own simply as music.

Some scores will go down in history as brilliant pieces both in connection to a film and on their own. One such score belongs to THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Thomas Newman’s musical accompaniment is atmospheric, sweeping, truimphant, and sad all at the same time. You can feel the pain of the characters through the music and even listening to it by itself you can pinpoint exactly where in the movie it corresponds to. In short, it is perfect.

Our very own Kevin Blanchard (aka Droz) has put together a tribute to THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and Thomas Newman’s score. Check it out below and I guarantee you will want to watch it again.
