Andrew Garfield talks The Amazing Spider-Man 2; may not return for fourth film

Dec. 10, 2013by: Paul Shirey

British actor Andrew Garfield has risen to fame thanks largely to swinging on webs in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (and also for squaring off with Justin Timberlake in THE SOCIAL NETWORK) and the star recently sat down with Yahoo UK to discuss the next chapter in the webhead's cinematic adventures, once again helmed by director Marc Webb. Garfield discusses crying during the first pitch for the film, the pitfalls of the first film, the direction of the sequel, and how the fourth film was news to him.

On crying at the pitch meeting for TASM 2:

“I sat with [writers] Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman in a restaurant for lunch in New York, and they pitched me this movie… And I was crying. I was really emotionally moved by what they said to me. And I think a lot of my emotion was because these two guys love the character as much as I do."

On the disadvantages of the first film:

“I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through.”

On whether or not he's onboard for the announced 4th film:

“I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a forth one? That’s not anything to do with me."

On the direction of the sequel:

“But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world,” he added. Use our imagination, and kind of expand. That’s what this film is.”

Director Marc Webb also weighed in, saying that the rebooted series was always intended to be a trilogy, saying:

“We did think about these movies from the very beginning as a series of movies,” admits Webb. “Really a trilogy to be totally frank.”

I know there's a lot of complaints already about THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, but I'm seeing more potential than downfalls. I love the Raimi films (okay, I love TWO of them) and was vehemently against another origin film with the reboot, but now that that's behind us I feel like the series can progress and get into some of the cooler aspects of the character (i.e. the formation of the Sinister Six and the likely demise of Gwen Stacy). I'm more optimistic this time around. In the end, none of us benefit from a bad movie, so my fingers are crossed that this one will surprise us.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters on May 02, 2014.

grrrrrr...

i really fucking hope they dont change the actor for a THIRD FUCKING TIME once the fourth one rolls around... im fucking sick of film series' changing the established actors of the main character roles.... its so fucking annoying and really takes you out of the entire experience of the franchise, and almost destroys all the work and planning they have surpassing the third film, if he does bail. he better not, or im gonna be pissed. its bad enough we had to do the same with the hulk, and with

I've been waiting for Electro for a while so hopefully they don't screw this up. Spiderman has always been my favorite superhero... it would be sad to seem him die just to bring in Miles Morales.
On another note, have ya'll figured out whether BJ is playing Octavius or not? The castings in the original franchise were so good, its hard to picture anyone else play these characters.

They can start fresh with a new actor and director after Amazing Spiderman 3 but please please please don't tell the origin again. Spectacular Spiderman, Ultimate Spiderman, Web of Spiderman... This can go on forever. Spiderman should be a young man, just as James Bond needs to be in his thirties, forties or fifties, so they'll need to replace the actors on a regular basis.

Totally agree... They need to let everyone know when they cast the new spider-man it will only be for 3 movies then we replace him but not start over. Dosnt the show Dr. Who do something similar?

Well, Sony might want another reboot after a 3rd film anyway, so don't hold your breath. Honestly, the trailer for Amazing Spider-man 2 looks more like a Raimi film than the first Amazing Spider-man. Everytime I see it, I can't help but think how cool it would be to see these villains (Electro, Rhino, maybe Hydroman and Vulture in the future) in Raimi's Spider-man 4 over this movie.

You know what, I actually really like Garfield's take on the character more than I did Tobey Maguire's.

Spoilers, maybe?

Maybe they plan on following the Ultimate Spiderman and the fourth will introduce Miles Morales after Spidey falls to the Sinister Six...

thats like the only plausible, reasonable way to go if garfield bails, other than fast-forwarding into the future some, to make it a more aged spidey.... but if its miles, even though i like the ultimate comics, i dont think this early in a franchise, they should make a leap like that, if thats the way they go. but, its not like garfield would give them a choice, if he does decide to ditch the entire franchise.... what a dick you gotta be to ruin a fucking established franchise and all this

I'd love Gardfield and Webb to step away after the third Spider-Man, like Nolan and Bale after the third Dark Knight.
Not because I don't like them - on the contrary - but because a real filmmaker can tell a story in max. three movies, not more*. A filmseries from the 4th one is just cash grab.

*excluding films based on bookseries like Harry Potter or... no, just Harry Potter.

Call me crazy, but I much prefer Marc Webb's Spider-Man over the Raimi ones. I prefer Garfield as Peter Parker instead of Maguire, and I WAY prefer Emma Stone over Kirsten Dunst.
And as far as Garfield not returning for a 4th one, I'm sure it's all about the contract negotiations. If TASM2 does well I'm pretty sure Sony will want to sign him up.

As someone kind of 'on-the-fence' about Garfield, I definitely did NOT need to see that douchey photo of him above . . .

So what will the reboot of the reboot be called?

The Ultimate Spider-Man? Starring Josh Hutcherson as Peter Parker and Justin Bieber (in his 'amazing' film debut) as Harry Osborn? I better not give the studio any ideas, eh?

I'm glad to hear how he thought the first reboot film had its flaws and was more effects driven then character driven. The trailer for the new film looked good and I'm hoping it doesn't repeat the same mistakes that the first film had.

I'm just hoping it doesn't repeat any of Raimi's mistakes on his 3rd film.

I really wish creators would start thinking outside the box and move beyond trilogies. I think they can be stifling creatively and they give the characters more freedom to grow when they think past just 3 films. Especially a property like Spider-Man - a series about him and his world could go on for many years. I know the proposed 4th ASM movie seems like a studio decision and Webb and Garfield are trying to distance themselves from it, but can they really give Peter and MJ's story a beginning,

Even if this cast and crew leaves after part 3 Sony should continue the continuity with new actors. Another reboot shouldn't be in the cards.

if Andrew Garfield won't return for the 4th movie, I think Logan Lerman would be a great replacement as Peter Parker
