Updated: Anthony Hopkins wrote a fan letter to Bryan Cranston after binge-watching Breaking Bad!

Oct. 14, 2013by: Paul Shirey

UPDATE: The original post of this was removed from Steven Michael Quezada's Facebook so it may well be a hoax. But, a damn fine one at that! Sounds like the work of Badger and Skinny Pete to me...

UPDATE 2: Nope, it is Hopkins after all, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. So, let the coolness continue!

Now, this is f*cking cool.

Academy Award winning actor Anthony Hopkins is one of the finest actors in Hollywood. I don't think anyone woudl dispute that. His accolades are well deserved and hard earned, but that hasn't put the actor above being a fan of another actor.  Like many of us who showed up a little late in the game to the pure awesomeness that was (sniffle) Breaking Bad, Hopkins recently binge-watched AMC's hit show and was so overwhelmed with admiration for it that he wrote to series star Bryan Cranston in order to relay how much he enjoyed the show and all involved. In many ways, Hopkins is merely exuding the exact same sentiment that many of us non Academy Award winners have felt, but it's pretty cool to hear another actor of the same caliber share his feelings on the show to those who truly made it such a rewarding experience.

Take it away, Sir Anthony!

Dear Mister Cranston.

I wanted to write you this email – so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber – I take it we are both represented by UTA . Great agency.

I’ve just finished a marathon of watching “BREAKING BAD” – from episode one of the First Season – to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen – ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I’ve sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular – absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers…. every department – casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to – would you pass on my admiration to everyone – Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada – everyone – everyone gave master classes of performance … The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I’ve ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It’s almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards

Tony Hopkins.

Anthony Hopkins will next be seen on the big screen in THOR: THE DARK WORLD on November 8, 2013, while Cranston gears up for the ultimate monster showdown in GODZILLA, out on May 16, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Reading this letter in Anthony Hopkins' voice makes it all the better...

I really really should watch this entire series on one sitting. The last time I ever did a series marathon was Doctor Who. Before that, uh... The OC. Yeah I wasn't too proud of that.

That's funny! Cause I finally binge watched Breaking Bad a couple of weeks ago and the months prior to that I binge watched Doctor Who! The nuWoh that is, after that I started the old ones. BBut I'm still working my way through those. But you're in for a treat with your Breaking Bad marathon, I can guarantee you that!

Awesome and true!

I can only picture one thing and that is Sir Anthony Hopkins awake at 3 in the morning after watching 6 episodes in a row and yelling "Fuck you Breaking Bad I have to watch one more!", then pouring a bowl of Cap'n Crunch and tearing through 3 more episodes until the sun comes up. It is a similar situation I have been in SO many times and it's cool to think of one of the greatest actors in the history of film doing the same thing.

Hoax

Reading this, I thought it must be a hoax. And your source has updated their story indicating it likely is a hoax.
EDIT: Well - guess it was real. Seems kind of cheesy that they leaked that personal email of praise, though.

That's nice, but I find it quite telling of where society is now at in terms of film entertainments that an article discussing two great actors such as these ends with a mention that one next stars in Thor, and the other in Godzilla. Not very "Jacobean or Shakespearean". I also chuckled when, in the trailer for Jack Ryan, Brannagh is noted as "The Director of Thor"... not saying any of these films are bad, just that it's an interesting sign of the times.

That's kind of the point Hopkins is making when he says "there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I’ve sort of lost belief in anything really". Playing Odin in Thor is not a great challenge for him and he obviously considers retiring but, at the same time, Marvel probably pays him a lot of money to be Odin. If anything he is jealous that Cranston was able to get such a good role and on TV no less. Maybe the next time HBO or some other cable network offers

Actually, one could tell that Kenneth Brannagh directed THOR, because of how he added Shakespearean and Greek tragedy elements to it.

WENT TO A SIMILAR ...

... Heisenberg spree, whole 6 seasons in 3 weeks. Just couldn't stop watching, turned out it was the best show I've ever seen. There was a lot of risk with final episode, but it also turned out epic. Spin-off with Saul also has potential.
