Awfully Good Movies: Blues Brothers 2000 (Video)

Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)

Director: John Landis
Stars: Dan Aykroyd, John Goodman, Joe Morton

A lot of hate is being thrown around this weekend's GHOSTBUSTERS remake, even with its good reviews, but Awfully Good Movies is here to remind you that if Dan Aykroyd made an actual GHOSTBUSTERS 3, you might get something as bad as the 1998 stinker BLUES BROTHERS 2000! Yes, John Belushi may have gone on to the great Animal House in the sky, but that didn't stop Dan Aykroyd and director John Landis from bringing the Blues Brothers back on another mission from God, with a little help from John Goodman, Myles Bennett Dyson from TERMINATOR 2, an annoying little kid, ghostly cowboys, Neo-Nazis, voodoo queens, zombies...need I say more? And you end up with a movie so confoundingly unfunny and dull, you'll be wishing Dan Aykroyd moved forward with NOTHING BUT TROUBLE 2 instead.

And if you liked this episode of Awfully Good Movies, then show that prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown and check out our previous episodes...

Extra Tidbit: Though Aykroyd lost 90 lbs. to reprise the role of Elwood, and both he and Goodman worked on the movie for free to keep the budget down, their efforts couldn't prevent the studio from coming in and making changes to the film, to the point Aykroyd and Landis had to be talked into staying on the film by Universal executive Robert K. Weiss. So Landis and Aykroyd made the indie crime comedy SUSAN'S PLAN the same year to cleanse their palate...only to be met with poor reactions at the AFI Film Festival and having the film go straight to video.

This is a guilty pleasure film for me. The first one is an absolute classic and one of my top 5 of all time and yeah, the second one isn't fit to wipe the ass of the original, but for some reason I still like it. I don't think Buster was as bad as many people make him out to be (he might be Jake reincarnated was the original plan?) and yes, the movie seems to have no point. I mean, Elwood reunites the band because he's bored, more than anything, yet somehow I still have fun watching it. The

The music is wonderful and the set pieces with all the dancers and choreography are a blast to watch. I agree wholeheartedly that the movie it total junk by comparison, but I still quote the fuck out of it and appreciate the Roadrunner-esque wackiness of much of the action.

"...if Dan Aykroyd made an actual GHOSTBUSTERS 3, you might get something as bad as the 1998 stinker BLUES BROTHERS 2000!"

Or even worse, Ghostbusters 2016.

Unless you've seen it, you won't know for sure. I'm gonna give it a chance. No bias, no anger, just looking for a fun movie. If you don't want to, that's cool. No argument to be had from me.

The "you can't know if fire is really hot until you actually put your hand into it" argument isn't a good one.

Dude, I was trying to be nice. Come the fuck on. I'm not condescending to you, why are you condescending to me? A lot of people like the movie. Get over it already.

Nope. This movie isn't awfully good. It's just awful. Too bad it couldn't out-shadow the first movie.

Hey man, I gave it 3/10. I ain't disagreeing whatsoever. The first flick is truly a classic, that is for sure.

No harms done, man. Don't worry. It's a great review. I'm glad to see Dan Akroyd reprised the role but the movie lacked a lot of things that made the first movie great.
