Bruce Willis exited The Expendables 3 because of $1 million

08.08.2013by:

Willis/Stallone

Yesterday Sylvester Stallone tweeted that Harrison Ford was joining THE EXPENDABLES 3 (excellent news!) and Bruce Willis had dropped out (bummer), but a lot of people were more interested in why Willis had left the project. Right after Stallone announced the news he followed it up with this tweet that many people thought might have been about Bruce Willis.

Turns out it was, the greed part anyway. A source for THR says the fallout was about (of course) money. Willis was offered $3 million for four days of work in Bulgaria (where the third movie will be filmed), but apparently he wanted more:

"He said he'd drop out unless he got $4 million," this source close to the production says. "A million dollars a day. Stallone and everybody else involved said no."

That's when Stallone reached out to Harrison Ford and snagged the actor for THE EXPENDABLES 3:

The insider adds, "I think [Willis] was pretty surprised he was replaced in 72 hours by Harrison Ford — a better actor, a much nicer person and a more interesting direction for the film."

OK, so to be fair after taxes and his agent's fee Bruce Willis was probably going to end up taking home closer to $2 million, but that's still for only four days of work. I'm sure many of us would have no problem working for that amount (hell, I'd eat my own fist for that price) but maybe it was just a little too low for Willis. Still, you'd think that since him and Sylvester Stallone are kind of buddies (they both invested in Planet Hollywood back in the 90s) Bruce Willis wouldn't have a problem with his paycheck, and it's not like he was going to be working for free or anything.

But you know what? Harrison Ford in THE EXPENDABLES 3 is fantastic news and if that means no Bruno in the third movie than so be it. It'll be his lost, not ours.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 is in theaters August 15th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Not a great year for Bruce Willis, huh?

How much money does Bruce Willis need?

What CAN'T he afford that he has to do this?

Cool....Hire some GREATFUL ACTORS...........

Maybe they'll have enough money to bring back Van Damme, or even bring in some newbies. I want to see BRUCE CAMPBELL IN EX3 OR EX4. He could even wield a chainsaw, or make a joke about it. What about Michael Biehn or Michael Pare? These guys are all awesome and would work for a tiny fraction of what Willis charges. Heck, they would love the opportunity to work with the other great names, not to mention the exposure for their own careers.

I'm pretty sure Willis did the first Expendables for free. IF this whole deal is what it seems to be, then there's probably something more going on than a simple spat over $1m. Bruce has still been doing some good work lately (Looper, Moonrise Kingdom, and he was fun in GI Joe), but he probably should be a little pickier with his other scripts, especially something as important (to his fans) as a Die Hard sequel. But who am I to say?

His role in the first Expendables was rather small and probably only lasted about half a day.

That was my point, and I got at least 10 thumbs down. I love this site, but the strike backers are all about hopping on a bandwagon. Todays' bandwagon is bashing Willis; tomorrows' might put H. Ford in their sights. There's a lot of passion here, but not always a lot of brain power. Nobody is willing to question the news placed under their noses.

First Kevin Smith

call's him out, now Sly? They both had some pretty bad things to say about him. He's definitely a dick...

Unlless Willis does another film with Wes Anderson or another director that critics love, and that film gets award love....I don't see Willis getting mainstream roles 2 years from now, everyone is kind of sick of him.

No surprise. The guy has had a slew of bad films and he seems so uninterested in his own career, I wouldn't be surprised if he is on his way to retirement.

I like Bruce Willis as much as the next man, but he's gotten pretty lazy with his choices of movies he takes on. Or at least the quality of the movies. Looper was probably the last one I enjoyed. But he has about 2 or 3 movies between each decent one he makes. I didn't care much for Expendables 2, but given his history with Sly and his choices with movies of late, $3 mil for 4 days is a fair gig. Not like he's prepping for an Oscar. It's a brainless action he could do in his sleep. He really

I just wish he'd choose them based on quality (I know Ex3 isn't exactly praise worthy), and not by the dollar signs.

Shame Willis is still plagued by his own ego. But this does explain the numerous Bruce Willis headlining DTV movies streaming on Netflix. If not for his past, Willis is close to becoming the new Nic Pay Day Cage.

Of course it doesn't occur to anyone

to question the legitimacy of an unnamed source, or to take Sly's tweet at anything but face value. I'm not saying Bruce Willis is a saint, but usually there's more to these things than what's on the surface. There could be friction between these guys, there could be some scheduling conflict. Of course, all entertainment gossip is always 100% accurate.

If I was a betting man....

Willis's recent behaviour suggests he may have ingested industrial amounts of peruvian marching powder over a prolonged period.
He's a cautionary tale (with buckets of money) :)

How in God's name is 3MILLION dollars for 4 days of work not enough? That is the epitome of greed! Personally, I can take him or leave him in any future Expendables films since his role is no longer needed (there was a set up in the 1st, the payoff in the 2nd), but seeing as he's been friends with Sly for about a quarter of a century, you'd think it would be about more than money. These films are fun and that's why these guys do them, for fun and to satisfy a desire a lot of old school action

His stance seems to be "it's business!" Well sure it's business but its also about friendship, loyalty and simply not being a doiche bag and overcharging for what would be a phoned in, glorified cameo. I love Bruce Willis of yesteryear but his ego and sour attitude are really soiling my appreciation.

I'm not gonna hate on Willis since all actors are capable of greed and jerkassery, after all they are human. I enjoy things he's been in but he's not a fav actor. I mean the movies that stand out the most to me are 5th Element, Unbreakable and first 2 Die Hards. (though I do like the 3rd one too). He's one of those "In every movie" people, paycheque kind of guy so...whatever. He's not first nor last person to make stupid money demands.

On a side note, judging how active Stallone is online and how I never hear anything bad about him, he honestly seems like a real nice guy and has a lot of fun making these movies. Yeah, I like the Expendables movies but even if I didn't, I'd be happy for Stallone that he's doing what he loves and is having a great time.

Good for him!

The Expendables franchise is horrible, the only reason people pay to watch it is for the star power and trying to write a script around a bunch of stars is never a good thing (see Batman Forever and Batman & Robin). If I were Willis and knew the movie was going to suck based on it's track record, I'd probably ask for more money too.

Yeah - the novelty of the first one was fine, but how many of these brainless movies do we need? I don't subscribe to laughably bad dialog being a plus on the grounds that it's somehow faithful to laughably bad dialog in 80s action movies. You can have balls to wall action *AND* still have a movie with other good qualities. Aside from being a who's who of former action stars, there's not a lot going for this.

Writing a script around a bunch of stars IS a good thing (see The Departed, Ocean's 11, Crash, Heat, Sin City, Inception, Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction, and dare I say, This Is The End)

There's a difference between writing a good script and casting good actors, writing a good script *for* good actors, and throwing together a crappy script to shoehorn over a flimsy premise. You do realize that, right? Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction, Inception and The Departed weren't written around the entire principal cast.

And you're not really holding up the script for The Department or Pulp Fiction as being on par with the script for The Expendables, or even This is the End? If so,

I forget sometimes, if there's high-caliber weaponry and steroid-inflamed muscles, there's no need for any other positive qualities - it's already a 9 out of 10 around here.

Is he a dick for wanting more money for so little work? Yes. But let's face it, the Expendables franchise is pretty damn awful, and I say this as a guy that lived through and watched (repeatedly) all of the 80's and 90's action flicks. The first one just made me laugh at how bad it was, and the second one I never made it through since I fell asleep.

Red 2 (which I saw last night), in comparison was a much better action movie, in my opinion, and just looked like it was more fun to work on.

I'm probably gonna get thumbed down for my opinion, but I don't care. The Expendables franchise makes the American Ninja franchise look like Oscar-worthy material.

I think Willis is a great actor when he wants to be...

But he's turned into a greedy, grumpy old prick lately... I mean, I've heard rumors about him being a prick ever since The Jackal, but it seems like he's pretty much dropped the veil and is done pretending to be pleasant. He's been a dick to reporters, to directors, to other actors. Not only that, but it seems like he doesn't really care about his career anymore, just the paycheck. You can always tell. When he's in something he wants to be in (Sixth Sense, 12 Monkeys, Whole 9 Yards) he seems genuine and delivers a great performance; When he's doing it just for the paycheck, his performance is very much phoned in (Whole 10 Yards, Cop Out, the last 2 Die Hards.) I like his work, for the most part, and think he's really talented when he cares about the project, but I think he's probably a dick in reality. I think, at his age, if he wants to keep working he should really loosen up and stop being so greedy... Michael Keaton gave himself a huge price tag after the 2nd Batman, and it pretty much got him blacklisted... Keep it up, Bruce, if you don't mind having a minor role in the next Herbie sequel.

This guy was overrated. Sure I love Die Hard 1&2 and a few of his other films, but never because of the his acting. There's a reason why they changed JGL's face and voice in Looper cuz they new Bruce could never pull something like that off.. Idk. This is just icing on the cake to the pricks career.

You know I have enjoyed Bruce far more than I have not....I have loved the roles RDJ has done, especially since owning Tony Stark...but it's a source of big disappointment when I hear them holding out for more money...when they're being paid pretty handsomely already. I'm from the UK, and our football stars often involved in such petty squabbles. I don't know, I'll never ever earn that kind of money so perhaps I don't know what kind of added pressures being rich adds to one's life...but I'd

Yeah. KalEl is right. He got paid that much for The Avengers and Iron Man 3 because he opted to take a smaller paycheck upfront in exchange for a portion of the box office profits... Now that his contract was up, he wasn't holding out for himself, he was looking out for his underpaid costars, considering that many of them made $2 to $3 million, when he made $50 mil. Marvel and Disney made over $400 million dollars profit. You think when Disney's banking that much, they'd stop bitching over

Everyone here is shitting their pants about 4 million, because we're all middle class drones. But 4 million in Hollywood money could just be the budget for Craft Services in some movies. I'm just saying, Angelina Jolie can sell a picture of her baby for 10 million, but Willis can't ask for 4 for a movie. You guys need a reality check, bad.

Welp, this was insulting. I work as a production coordinator, I make $200-350 a day on set for 12-18 hours of work. Sometimes, I have to help the Production Assistants or Grips do back breaking lifting of heavy equipment. I would eat human shit to make anywhere near that level of easy as Bruce Willis to make 3-4 million for a glorified cameo.

Dick move by Bruce

love Bruce Willis, and have enjoyed just about everything he's been in (including the great run he had on friends "I am a neat guy: lol) but come on, you dont have enough money?? you have to be that guy?? i figured kevin smith was just a dick too and they didnt get along but maybe smith was onto something, but the Harrison Ford news is GREAT! cant wait to see him interact with Stallone and Arnold,

While I'm all for an Expendables 3 I just wish they'd put as much effort into the script as they do in hunting down every 80s/90s name under the sun.
Seriously, how many more are they going for. I feel Mark Wahlberg's comment, "pull the wool over the audience’s eyes" is relevant here too.
Oh and while I'm ranting, Sly, stop using fucking twitter, you're a respected action star/actor not a 'celeb' (yes there is a difference).

3 million for 4 days worth of work isn't enough?!? What a greedy bastard. Shit, I would work in a sweatshop for 4 YEARS to make that kind of money. I do like Willis as an actor but he seems like an asshat.

I just read that Harrison Ford is making 2 million dollars for 7 days of shooting. That's a much better deal then the insane money that Bruce Willis wanted for a glorified cameo. It sounds like Ford is actually going to have a pretty big part too...which is awesome.

So this was what incited Stallone's angry tweet. I think his ego has caught up to him. I'm sure lots of unlikeable actors continue to get work, but having a good working relationship with your peers probably helps matters and it seems Willis isn't able to keep that up.

It's not a big loss. I wish they would dig up Carl Weathers for this.

Me too! He and Kurr Russell have been at the top of the list for me since the start of this franchise.

I used to like Willis, but I've been hearing a lot of negative things about him over the last few years. Apparently he's a piece of shit...who knew?

Maybe this is all about Bruce Willy trying. And first things first, distance yourself from the crap franchise that is the Expendables.

One could hope. But I'm not holding my breath as Willis isn't exactly the best when it comes to quality control.

Asking for more money from that "crap franchise" does not seem to qualify as "distancing himself."
