UPDATE! Chloe Moretz and Haley Bennett are top contenders for the lead in the remake of Carrie

Mar. 28, 2012by:

UPDATE: Deadline reports that a formal offer has been made to Chloe Moretz for the title role in MGM's remake of CARRIE. She seems pretty stoked about it, too! From her Twitter page: "Never been so happy in my life! Thank you Kim Pierce and thank u MGM for the chance of a lifetime i will never forget!"

Mar. 26, 2012: In case you didn't know, there's a remake of CARRIE in the works, one that's said to be hewing closer to famed novelist Stephen King's original story. BOYS DON'T CRY director Kimberly Peirce is set to take the helm, and now it's being reported that there are two young actresses in contention to be drenched in pig blood.

According to Vulture, Chloe Moretz (DARK SHADOWS) and Haley Bennett (Terrence Malick's LAWLESS) are the top contenders for the lead role in CARRIE. The two are said to be at the top of a list of actresses that include Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning, Bella Heathcote, and Lily Collins. Most recently, THE DESCENDANTS' Shailene Woodley passed on an offer from MGM to take on the titular part. Meanwhile, Carrie's nutty mom could be played by Jodie Foster or Julianne Moore, both of whom director Peirce has shown interest in.

Here's a breakdown of King's book (via Amazon):

Stephen Kings legendary debut, about a teenage outcast and the revenge she enacts on her classmates.

Carrie White may have been unfashionable and unpopular, but she had a gift. Carrie could make things move by concentrating on them. A candle would fall. A door would lock. This was her power and her sin. Then, an act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offered Carrie a chance to be a normal and go to her senior prom. But another actof ferocious crueltyturned her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that her classmates would never forget.

She's kinda too pretty for the role.. But she's also a great actress so I'm sure it'll work out.

Just as long as they sufficiently weird her up. There were pretty girls who were weird and kind of outcasts from other girls, but the only people who got seriously shit on were ugly. Boys usually refrain from mocking girls they'd actually bang if given the chance.

Moretz doesn't have the chops. Saoirse Ronan or Hailee Steinfeld would have been more interesting choices if they're going for that age group.

I haven't read the story, but going off the classic movie, Saoirse Ronan would be a perfect match, aesthetic-wise.

Well, they've already failed. Carrie was fat and pimply, wholly unlikable. You can't cast pretty girls as the outcast that people dump on.

Not really. The character of Carrie is 16, Chloe is 15.

The ONLY thing that has me interested in this is Kimberly Pierce. And that's just cuz thirteen years ago she came out with a movie that still haunts me to this day, and has since made only one other film. I don't know Haley Bennett so I vote her. Chloe Moretz has been doing such good work I don't want her to go and ruin things by being in a remake of a bona fide classic that will never be appreciated the same. Fuck this fucking project.

I understand creative interpretation and I'm sure this'll be remade for ages but I'd be thrilled to see one resemble the book closer.

I also thought it'd be brilliant to be a half documentary a la 'The Shadow Exploded'.

"...hewing closer to famed novelist Stephen King's original story."

Carrie is overweight and pimply. The film should feel like Precious, only she's white and telekinetic. Hell, Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) would be a better choice.
