Christopher Nolan releases a statement regarding the tragedy in Colorado

07.20.2012

Christopher Nolan has released a statement on the tragedy that hit Colorado:

"Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Well said, Mr. Nolan. I think that he has perfectly summed up how we are all feeling.

Straight to the horror

Nolan acknowledges the most horrific part - you are so vulnerable in the theater, in the dark. I've always felt safe and relaxed, like nothing bad can ever happen to me while watching a movie.
But fuck if I'm gonna let a psycho stop my movie going experience. I am grateful people are showing solidarity but we also need to defy the threat of potential psychos. Go see a movie, go live your lives

Very well put. Nolan has a great way with words, and he sums up how I feel perfectly. The movie theater is like a favorite vacation spot for me. I love going there. I get to witness so many wonderful things and have so many wonderful moments. For someone to come in and ruin that for people, it's almost unbelievable. As someone who has always loved movies, it greatly effective.

"movies are one of the great American art forms"

What the fuck? And why the hell would a Brit say that? Unless he didn't write it himself of course...

"What the fuck? And why the hell would a Brit say that? Unless he didn't write it himself of course..."

What the fuck? And why the hell would anyone say that? Unless he didn't bother to do the two seconds of research it would take to find out what most people already know: that Christopher Nolan has always been a dual citizen of America and the UK. And what does it matter?

His citizenship wasn't really my main quibble with what he said but thanks for thanks for that piece of trivia nonetheless.

What I'm still wondering though is; how is film an American art form?

And thanks for the support guys, but you've all seem to have clicked on the wrong thumb.

Nice try, but I don't believe you. If you REALLY didn't mean that his citizenship was in question, then why did you bother mentioning that he was a "Brit"? Still, let's stop for a moment and say that you aren't full of shit. First, he wasn't saying that cinema belongs to America, rather that this tragedy was brought home because cinema is so prevalent in this country. Film IS a great American art form. You can't deny the veracity of that statement. Film is also a great British art form. A great

I'm still wondering why, out of everything that happened and been said, this is what you decide is important.

Are you unfamilair of the usage of the word "and"? My main point was "What the fuck?". After that I used that funny little word "And" to mention, on a side-note, that it's especially quaint for a a Brit to say what he said. But as you informed me that he's "half" American; that takes care of that.

Out of everything that happened? Well, what happened? Another whacked-out American shot a bunch of people. Hurrah for the 2nd amendment, etc. etc. There is very little that hasn't already been said

Hurrah for the 2nd amendment, etc. etc. There is very little that hasn't already been said about those matters? What can I add to that? So instead, I chose to comment on the only thing that struck me as odd in Mr. Nolan's statement.

Speaking of nice tries; I like what you did with the British, Korean, Italian art form part. You are right of course, in fact, what you are saying is it's an art form that belongs to every country. Thanks for making my point.

And the "tragedy was brought home because cinema is so prevalent in this country" bullshit, is just that; bullshit. The only reason that psycho chose a movie theater was because he knew it would be jam packed because of the TDKR. It might as well had been a school again.

Try again.

You're so right. "What the fuck?" was clearly the pith of your clever and well-reasoned line of questioning. Although, to be fair, in the English language the use of the coordinating conjunction 'and' is meant to signify an additional clause, equal to the first clause. Coordinating conjunctions join independent clauses, so to say that your 'and' made the "Brit" statement a side-note is either a lie or an admission that you aren't aware how grammar works.

Yes, thank you for the summation of

Yes, thank you for the summation of "everything that happened." My point here being that you picked something very tangential to talk about. Also, I use the term "talk about" loosely, because really you just sandwiched an obscenity into some vague question without actually asking anything at all. "What the fuck?" hardly seems like much of a discussion starter to me.

Yes, it belongs to every country. Nolan never said that it was ours and only ours. Guess I'm not sure why you're so bent out of shape over this.

No. It's not bullshit. It's an attack on somewhere we hold dear. I don't claim to know why this particular whackjob chose a movie theater, but I do know that it's especially vexing to me because A) I see a great deal of films and B) I work at a movie theater. This hit close to home. THAT is what Nolan (and a great number of other filmmakers, who have chimed in) was saying. If you think that's bullshit, then maybe it's bullshit for you, but try as hard as you want (and you seem to be trying pretty hard, don't strain anything) you can't decide how other people should feel or react to this event.

Boy, you really try way too hard to find fancy, big words online. You're either the smartest movie theater employee that I've ever met or well... you're not.

Allow me to explain on a movie theater employee level, because you seem to have gotten lost in all those fancy words when searching for an explanation. If person A says to person B; "The world is about to end! And you're an asshole." To me, and any other mentally stable person, it would be quite obvious what person B's main concern is

To me, and any other mentally stable person, it would be quite obvious what person B's main concern is and what his side-note comment is. But you on the other hand would find the fact that the world is about to end is no more important than the fact that person B finds person A an asshole. See? No fancy words, and yet I made my point.

One thing that I've been letting slide, since your first comment, is that you have somehow been able to, without a doubt, know exactly what Mr. Nolan means when he says something. Exhibits A and B:
"First, he wasn't saying that cinema belongs to America"
- Uh, he called films an American art form, so yes he was saying that.
"Nolan never said that it was ours and only ours."
- Well, he didn't say to whom else it belongs either.

How the hell do you know what he meant anyway? Let's go back to my original question; why did he say that movies are an American art form? None of your quasi-wise-cracks were actually answers. You obviously don't why he said it. So please stop wasting my time and go collect some stubs or something.

First, what a shallow, desperate attempt to pass the buck that you feel to need to question not my grammar, but how I came by said grammar. Bravo, sir, bravo. As it happens, I am a college graduate working on a second degree. I also tutor English. So--and I shall endeavor to use small words from here on out, since clearly you didn't get to such specimens as 'conjunction' and 'pith' before dropping out of high school--to be blunt, go fuck yourself. While there's nothing above a fifth-grade reading level in what I said, it does tickle me a little that you felt threatened enough to go off on a tirade regarding how I knew whichever of those words you didn't understand. Cheers, for that.

Actually, to your point, I think if someone said "The world is about to end! And you're an asshole" then this is a perfect example of how 'and' isn't a word that diminishes import. The fact that person A feels that my being an asshole is important enough to mention right alongside with the end of the world is quite interesting and bears exploration. If it was truly to insignificant as all that, person A wouldn't feel the need to mention it at all. This is not a case of 'The world is about to end and cornflakes are delicious.' At least, if that IS the sort of association you're attempting to make, then I daresay it isn't my own mental stability that needs to be under question.

Lot's of things are American without our country having ownership over them. Some began here (the "great American passtime" for example) and some we simply adopted. Film IS one of the great American art forms. We're not so big on cave paintings anymore, at least not where I'm from. I don't have to be a mind-reader to be able to grasp what Nolan was saying, and the fact that you are the only one up in arms about it while 102 (and counting) people think you're ridiculous is certainly not doing much to indicate any validity to your point. But appealing to those numbers would be fallacious, so let's not do that just yet. It's also humorous that you repeat my phrase "Nolan never said that it was ours and only ours" when you're accusing me of making up insight into his mind. Ghandi never said "Let's go rape and pillage and light orphans on fire" either, and it doesn't take a Vulcan mind meld to be able to infer such. Incidentally, your ire is equally based on things he did not say, which is why your ranting and raving is so amusing.

Actually, in case you had a stroke, that WAS germane to original question. You took what he said the wrong way. What you wanted to hear was "Cinema is a strictly American art form. We own it. Fuck everybody else." He said nothing of the sort. Not even close. So arguing over the veracity of what he didn't say would be pointless. As much as I (obviously) like pointless arguments, that's a step too far.

So, in closing, congratulations on your victory. No doubt you earned it by your level-headed reasoning and sagacious articulation. Enjoy that bed of laurels.

That's because my case still stands. You have given me your 2 cents on why you think Nolan called film an American art form but seeing as how you are an American your reasonings are very biased and therefore rather moot.

Nonetheless, I thank you for your contributions. It has been amusing though sadly not at all enlightening. I just wish that someone else could've chipped in and had a go but it's too late seeing as how this article is too old now.

Very nice. I can only assume that you have nothing cogent by means of a retort since, for the second time, you are ignoring any of my points in favor of completely irrelevant posturing. My opinion is invalid because I'm American? First, you don't know what I am. Second, how does that invalidate my opinion? Hey, you're white, so your opinion on racism is invalid! But hey, better luck next time. Oh, and if you were wondering what people would have chimed in with, take a look at your thumbs

For a college educated, movie theater employee, savant you aren't very bright. How do I know that you are American? Uh... let's see: "Lot's of things are AMERICAN without OUR COUNTRY having ownership over them. Some began HERE (the "great American passtime" for example) and some WE simply adopted."
You should stop wasting your time finding posh synonoms to replace your words with (most of the shit you say makes no sense) and spend more on plain logical thinking.

As for the thumbs down meter, I find it amusing that you actually think that over a 100 people thumbed me down, but the count pretty much stagnated at -45. When I told my friends about it, they thought it would be funny "help" me out and take it down even further. Beyond that, this is like the 3rd time you brought up the fact that a lot of Schmoes disagree with (and therefore you must be right) but you know as well as I do that 90% of them are big time Nolan fans, thus rendering their view on this matter also rather moot.

I love how you've been worked into a corner and you continue to feel the need to cheat; stop twisting my words, I never said "invalid". Tisk tisk, mustn't cheat my pet.

How is an American's opinion on something related to America biased? Maybe you should go back to college and do something else besides trolling and watching movies.

Just because someone already has a view of something or someone tangentially-related to your argument doesn’t mean you can ignore ‘em (although I know it must be rough when they disagree with you. It’s okay, sunshine, hang in there). In fact, if you want to poll people without ANY previous bias, then you’ll end up with potentially worse information, because they’ll also have less point of reference and basis of knowledge to form and informed opinion.

You’re right, you never said “invalid.” You did, however, say “Moot,” possibly more than once. In the context, it meant essentially the same thing as “invalid”. So, “my pet,” you might want to do consider doing some synonym research yourself instead of erroneously accusing me of such. Don’t worry, darling, you’re get there.

Sure the American film industry is the biggest in the world. Americans also drive a lot of Toyota's, but that doesn't make it an American car. If you would mean to say that Toyota's have become a part of the American driving/automobile culture or anything else like that then you should say it like that or you might piss off a lot of Japanese people.
And when I said that your opinion is biased, I meant that as an American you like the fact that Nolan called film an American art form. So you're gonna keep defending it with all you've got, no matter how (un)fair his statement is. That's why, at least to me, everything you have to say about it, is (here it comes again) moot.

You can't just assume a bias on my part. Just because I live here doesn't mean I lend this country and special priority. It's just a place, good and bad. You're simply making assumptions because it helps your case to do so instead of actually talking about specifics.

Mr. Nolan is a writer, and writing is about aesthetics. The pith of his statement was regarding the tragedy in Aurora. He was not writing a treatise on the geographic development of cinema, and any expounding on that topic

But, at this point you aren't bothering to respond to anything new, instead electing to simply stamp your foot and claim that no one is saying anything new. So I don't feel the need to go any further.

I also don't like that Bat-solidarity-logo. This tragedy is not really connected with The Dark Knight/Batman. It just drew many people into a movie theater (which was expectable) and some cowardess asshole used this circumstance for living out his violent phantasies. Connecting this crime with this movie will create a monument for the shooter in form of a movie.

Prayers go out to all those who had to endure this horrible tragedy. To have some f**ktard come in and do such horrendous things takes away the feeling of safety people get from indoor places like this, especially in cinemas. I hope the guy who did this rots from the inside out. Die in pain, shitsack.
