The following is what happens when visionary directors JJ Abrams (LOST, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: III, and STAR TREK) and Joss Whedon (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, FIREFLY, SERENITY, DOLLHOUSE, and the upcoming THE AVENGERS) join the stage in Hall H as they headline Entertainment Weekly's The Visionaries panel. Hold on to your butts folks, this is gonna be epic!

The big news to come out of this panel were pretty damn big. For example...

  • Joss Whedon officially announces that he will be directing THE AVENGERS (though he's still writing a draft of it at this point).
  • JJ Abrams starts shooting SUPER 8 in September. Again, he couldn't say anything because there's nothing to tell at this point.
  • Whedon's CABIN IN THE WOODS is going to be in 3D because it's the popular thing to do. If it were up to him, it would stay in 2D.
  • Abrams liked how LOST ended and he couldn't be happier with the finale.

To check out all the fun of the Visionaries panel, including more responses to more questions, click on the COVER IT LIVE box below, and read how it all unfolded LIVE. With that said... let's go AVENGERS!!!

We're gonna be covering most of the Comic Con panels LIVE from the hall in which they're being presented, so you can follow us LIVE via the COVER IT LIVE widget below. You can also post your comments into the widget, but we will be moderating those comments, of course. Enjoy!

"I don't think it's necessary to go to film school." Wow, truly mind blowing stuff.

Aside from the confirmation that Whedon will be directing The Avengers, it sounds like this panel was a bit of a waste of time.

I really can't believe neither of them could talk about any of their upcoming projects. Abrams couldn't reveal ANYTHING about the fourth Mission:...

I really can't believe neither of them could talk about any of their upcoming projects. Abrams couldn't reveal ANYTHING about the fourth Mission: Impossible? What about Star Trek? Would he be interested in directing the next one? How far along is the script? Do they have a story at least?

What about what Whedon plans to bring to The Avengers? How does he feel about the whole Ed Norton situation?

    Something... anything!

I totally appreciate the coverage all the same, Ammon.

Couldn't agree more with you. I would have loved to seen what he would have said about the Ed Norton depature. I also thought he was already done with Super 8 as well, since there is a teaser trailer and all. And yeah it would have been nice if he said something about Star Trek or Mission Impossible. Gotta give him props for liking how LOST ended. It truly was the best ending for the show.
