DJ Caruso directing teenage alien drama I Am Number Four

DJ Caruso’s portfolio is filled with twists and turns thus far, with DISTURBIA making a big splash but EAGLE EYE and TWO FOR THE MONEY fizzling. TAKING LIVES got Angelina Jolie pretty naked, so there’s that.

His latest effort is something a bit different, as he’s looking to outer space for inspiration. Well, at least to a book that looked to outer space for inspiration. He’s set to direct an adaptation of James Frey (yes, that Oprah guy) and Joby Hughe’s not-quite-out-yet teen novel, “I Am Number Four.”

It’s about “a group of nine aliens who escaped their home planet just before it was annihilated by a rival species. Hiding out on Earth, the title character disguises himself as a human high schooler, only to discover he is being hunted still by his planet’s enemy.” The script? That would be from Smallville’s Gough and Millar, well versed in teenage alien angst for some time now.

It is rather interesting to sit back and watch new movie genres bloom based on one successful initial entry. X-MEN and SPIDER-MAN brought us an infinite amount of superhero movies, TRANSFORMERS has launched a slew of toy films and now TWILIGHT is turning every young adult novel into a movie franchise. Will aliens be the new vampires which are the new zombies which are the new pirates? I don’t care, as long as they don’t sparkle.
