DJ Caruso directing teenage alien drama I Am Number Four

Jan. 20, 2010by: Paul Tassi

DJ Caruso's portfolio is filled with twists and turns thus far, with DISTURBIA making a big splash but EAGLE EYE and TWO FOR THE MONEY fizzling. TAKING LIVES got Angelina Jolie pretty naked, so there’s that.

His latest effort is something a bit different, as he’s looking to outer space for inspiration. Well, at least to a book that looked to outer space for inspiration. He’s set to direct an adaptation of James Frey (yes, that Oprah guy) and Joby Hughe’s not-quite-out-yet teen novel, "I Am Number Four."

It’s about “a group of nine aliens who escaped their home planet just before it was annihilated by a rival species. Hiding out on Earth, the title character disguises himself as a human high schooler, only to discover he is being hunted still by his planet’s enemy.” The script? That would be from Smallville’s Gough and Millar, well versed in teenage alien angst for some time now.

It is rather interesting to sit back and watch new movie genres bloom based on one successful initial entry. X-MEN and SPIDER-MAN brought us an infinite amount of superhero movies, TRANSFORMERS has launched a slew of toy films and now TWILIGHT is turning every young adult novel into a movie franchise. Will aliens be the new vampires which are the new zombies which are the new pirates? I don’t care, as long as they don’t sparkle.

Extra Tidbit: I cannot believe "Smallville" is still on. How long can it freaking take to learn how to fly?

What...

... does it mean for Caruso's Dead Space movie? Postponed, new director, before this?

I got as far as Taking Lives and the comment about Jolie than I was too distracted by that memory of her. What a great moment of cinema

Sounds interesting...

I loved "The Salton Sea", "Disturbia" and "Eagle Eye" and this movie sounds very interesting too. He is a good director and is good at what he does even though the story for Eagle Eye was a bit far fetched; but for the most part it was enjoyable. My best bet is he will cast Shia Labeouf(sp?) for the lead considering that is his golden boy. And that's fine by me because they make a good team.

I am a big Caruso fan. His first film "The Salton Sea", is a brilliant neo-noir. "Taking Lives" and "Two For The Money" had some excellent shots and great acting, but had weak scripts. "Disturbia" was a surprise, being intense and fun, with excellent acting (he's great with his actors). "Eagle Eye", while not amazing, was fun. So, I am completely on-board for this.

His career has been so-so so far. Disturbia wasn't too bad for what it was. I thought Eagle Eye definitely showed some promise but was let down by a half-ass story. Taking Lives was a terribly boring film...this could go either way, if Bay was interested it probably doesn't have much story...on a seperate note Evangeline Lilly is immensely hot. Thanks yeehaw08.

Michael Bay?

Do I remember Michael Bay talking at one point about doing this before he did Transformers 3, or am I just making that up?

Caruso, Gough & Millar. Recipe for a disaster.
