Does James Cameron plan to shoot the Avatar sequels back to back?

08.09.2010

You guys wanted more AVATAR news today, right?

During a conversation with MTV, James Cameron said that AVATAR parts 2 and 3 could be filmed back to back. But first, he must finish work on his AVATAR novel that he is quite focused on getting out.

Cameron says that they are still working out details for the sequel and that he is currently making notes on it. He talks about his plans for the novel, "I never had a chance to get the novel done while we were making the movie, and I always intended to. I didn't want to do a cheesy novelization, where some hack comes in and kind of makes shit up. I wanted to do something that was a legitimate novel that was inside the characters' heads and didn't have the wrong culture stuff, the wrong language stuff, all that."

When the novel comes out, Cameron hopes that others will help him flesh out the universe. He wants to make sure that, for example, story arcs for Jake and Grace are developed in specific ways, "I don't mind opening the universe, but I just don't want that to happen until I've got more meat on the bones. ... That all needs to be filled in before other writers can come in and run with it."

Novel aside, Cameron talked about the possibility of the second and third installments being filmed at once, "We're actually talking about that. That's not a decision yet. That is something that makes a lot of sense, given the nature of these productions, because we can bank all the [motion] capture and then go back and do cameras over a period of time." It would seem like a single production for two films would be tiring, but Cameron thinks it wouldn't be so bad, "The way these back-to-back productions fall apart is that you're trying to do two live-action films back to back, and you're working on it for a year and a half, shooting. Everyone is dead. It's not humanly possible. This type of film, it absolutely would work."

No interest at all in a sequel to this. The first one was disappointing enough.

So he's admitting to all ready knowing he will make 2 more films, but he has no real concrete ideas for those films. I personally wasn't impressed with Avatar, but Cameron is capable of some good stuff. If he can pull an original, and I stress original story together in that universe it could be worth something. But if he can't, and just gives us Dances with Wolves again, it won't be worth a damn.

Cameron is the best director alive for making sequels (Aliens was better than Alien, and Terminator 2 was better than Terminator). I can't wait for the Avatar sequels.

'Aliens' and 'T2' are good films, but I wouldn't say they were better than their predecessors.

Aliens and Alien are very different... but one can argue that the second might be better. T2 on the other hand.. is that a joke? It basically revolutionized the action movie and is far and away 10 times better then the original.

How many TRUE sequels were as good as the first?

I'm talking about sequels to a movie that stood alone, beginning to end, where an entirely new story is told in the universe of the first story.

Godfather 2...maybe?
Aliens....maybe?

Ok, I'm stuck coming up with 2, out of the thousands of sequels out there.

Originality, not sequels, are what make a truly great and worth-making movie.

But, in full disclosure, I haven't had my coffee yet and I have an unexplainable hatred of James Cameron ;)

For those who have had enough Avatar, then don't watch it or read the novel. I can see him not wanting someone to come along and fuck up something he worked that hard on, and am thinking he can take the first movie and make an even better sequel like he did for T2 and Aliens. The guy isn't known for bad quality films.

Will add,1st film was amazing! But no interest in sequels personally. Cameron is way too awesome to be tied up for probably more like 2 years doing these films. (IF they actually happen?) Too many other films this man needs to make before his departure, hopefully way off in the future...but one never knows, right?

Avatar sequels are the most interesting thing about avatar part 2:

the reason for a sequel being interesting is cause its actually a story he'll make up, at least i hope so. Sure, Avatar was just Dances With the Wolves, Pocahontas, etc. What happened in the Dances with Wolves sequel? Pocohantas 2? (although that would be pretty funny if he blatantly ripped that off) This guy has to give us something new the 2nd time around or people will lose interest. And with the guys track records with sequels(Aliens, T2) i'll play ball with Avatar 2. I'm not gonna

Avatar sequels are the most interesting thing about avatar part 1:

I admit, fuck the first avatar. I too, was blown away by the effects the first time, but looking back now, other than that, it brought nothing to the table. A movie should be about the story and characters first and foremost. When you focus on purely effects. You just get a michael bay transformers movie

Visually I'm sure it will be a treat again, but story wise I don't know if I'm feelin it. Granted the first film's story wasn't amazing so maybe they'll expand on it in a good way.

2 Avatar sequels? Sounds great to me! From the man who brought us "Aliens" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," I highly doubt these proposed films will suck. Really, give me a break......

AVATAR was cool, but I'm not really excited about sequels. I'd rather see Cameron take the same tech and put it towards another film.

I will defend Avatar till death. Its an energetic, refreshing adventure film with the kind of storytelling exuberance we don't see often these days. So the story itself isn't wholly unique its still more fun and engaging then most of the shit that comes out. Cameron CREATED this world. Everything on screen has a name and plays part in the ecosystem of Pandora. I would love to see it expanded upon.

Forget the haters. Sure, Avatar was a bit overrated but there is much worse out there. It was a fun flick and I'd be up for a couple sequels. But I feel like Cameron thinks he created the next Star Wars. Expanded universe novels? I'm sorry, but I don't think that many people are interested. Nobody is seeking out Avatar toys, video games, props, etc. No body quotes lines from the movie (not that there were any memorable lines). However, it was a good movie and Cameron is still a top tier

Here's how this article sums up Avatar for me. It just doesn't feel like a film at all. It feels like a highly engineered product. It was highly anticipated because we read articles similar to this before we even saw a trailer. Cameron does a fantastic job at baiting the crowds, the numbers obviously speak. Not to bring up Inception, but Nolan could have made it in 3D, hyped the hallway fight, but he didn't, he let the trailers and the film speak for itself, not the other way around.

But the trailers and hype for Avatar received a very negative response. And Avatar was the 10th 3D movie to be released last year. Avatar made all of its money the same way Inception did, through pure word of mouth (they both opened with nearly the same numbers). That IS letting a film speak for itself.

Before the trailer for AVATAR: I was excited.

After the trailer for AVATAR: My excitement dropped a little bit, but I was still hoping for the best.

During second viewing of AVATAR: I fell asleep out of boredom.
