Excess, greed, and midget tossing in first trailer for Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio

06.17.2013

Martin Scorsese gets back into the criminal world again this fall, this time tackling one of the most evil and corrupt organizations in existence: Wall Street. Based on the autobiography of stockbroker Jordan Belfort, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as "the wolf" (aka Belfort), who, in the 1990's led a life of hedonistic excess as a result of his lust for power, that eventually led him down a path to ruin. Now, we have our first look at the trailer, which is chock full of the excess, greed, and downright oddities that come with being so rich you kind of go a little nuts. Or, in this case, SPRING BREAKERS meets GOODFELLAS as directed by Martin Scorsese.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

A New York stockbroker refuses to cooperate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, corporate banking world and mob infiltration.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConnaughey, Jonah Hill, Kyle Chandler, Margot Robbie, Jon Favreau, Rob Reiner, Jean Dujardin, Shea Whigham, John Bernthal, Ethan Suplee, PJ Byrne, and Kenneth Choi starts taking your money on November 15, 2013.

I'm lovin' it!

The trailer looks great... Not that you need to sell me on any Scorsese/DiCaprio vehicle, let alone one featuring two costars that are really starting to show promise. That being said, I think to me, the film looks less like "Goodfellas" meets "Spring Breakers" and more like "Wall Street" meets "Boiler Room" meets "Blow."

Give fucking credit where credit is due!!

Nowhere does it say in this article "written by Terrence Winter, creator of Boardwalk Empire". You would think by reading this article that Scorsese miracle'd this thing out of his ass and asked great talent to jump aboard. Everything starts with a script. If fucking Damon Lindolf would've written this or whatever hack fucking writer their balls your sucking on maybe they would've been given a hat tip. Keep on going Mathew McConnaughey keep putting out stellar work!!

Finding the time to write the script? You realize Scorsese is a producer on Boardwalk Empire, right? Put two and two together: Martin Scorsese and Terrence Winter were already working together on that show, so they obviously chose to collaborate on this movie together. Whether it was Scorsese bringing the project to him or the other way around, they already had a working relationship. Also, never underestimate the role of the director in the storytelling process. Damon Lindelof wrote a script based on some very clear and direct instructions from Ridley Scott, and Lindelof gets all the blame. Directors often have input on the script, and sometimes for the worse. Stop acting like Ridley Scott is blameless for the faults in Prometheus.

Who gives a fuck about Prometheus?! I was stating this site likes to kiss ass to hack writers whether the stories are positive or negative. I'm not saying that Scorsese didn't input anything, but we don't know who brought what to whom do we? Being a show runner is a very intense and time consuming job, it's not like he's sitting around a trailer all day throwing pencils in the ceiling while Scorsese comes up to him and say " hey terry, so this wolf of Wall Street thing? You wanna write a script?" "Yea fuck it got nothing else to do this show kinda runs itself" so yes I would like to thank Winter for finding time to write a script. I notice and researched that he was the only one writing the script, no script doctor or script supervisor revisions god only knows how many drafts he went through. But you will your all knowing knowledge knows that Winter handed Scorsese the script and he wiped his ass and created jazz on the go. Right?! Because of what you [link] the director in the storytelling process? Right right right cause even without a solid foundation a skyscraper will never fall.

Holy shit, Jimbo, you are all wound up for no reason. Lindelof gets fucking eviscerated on this site. I don't know whatever other "hack" writers you are referring to, but I know Lindelof gets pretty worked over on here. With good cause.

Why does Terrence Winter deserve credit for a good trailer? No one knows if the movie sucks or not. All we know is it has a great trailer. And it is a biopic, meaning most of the material is likely found in the book. I'm not diminishing Winter's talent, but

I think it was DiCaprio that brought the project to Scorsese and thus Winter via his Appian Way production company. They bought the rights to the book prior to anyone being aboard if I'm not mistaken. Not 100% on that but I believe that is what I read about the project.

I don't think Leonardo DiCaprio has that much say in the matter. All he can do is give quality performances. The Academy has to actually nominate him and then vote for his victory. Just because he didn't receive an Oscar doesn't mean he didn't deserve one. Leo can't do anything about it, other than campaign. The Academy is the one who will have to "prove you wrong." Other than that, why would Leo feel the need to prove anything to you?

Not what I thought it would be

I thought it would have a bit darker tone but I like what Marty seems to be going for here. It is going to be black comedy and social commentary which I am interested to see if he can pull off. I know he can though because he rules.

Now THAT is a TRAILER!!!!

Scorsese rarely does anything wrong in my book but this looks like another stellar addition to an already great career. The cast looks great, Leo DiCaprio is moving from strength to strength, and I'm glad to see Matthew McConaughey is finally escaping rom-com hell. I'm sold.

Now that was a great, well made trailer. DiCaprio seems to be in top form and I would love for this film to finally be the film that gets DiCaprio his long deserved Oscar. I mean how cool would it be to see DiCaprio win for Best Actor, Scorsese (again) for Best Director and the movie win Best Film.

Where did he go? Hugo was a beautiful film and proof that Martin Scorsese is comfortable in any genre, and to any age demographic. Scorsese has been consistent through most of his career.

Scorsese and DiCaprio can do no wrong

Not what I expected, but then again, I'm sure a second trailer will show the darker side to what we know will inevitably come. I'm hopeful Scorsese will soon return to his gangster territory. He needs to restore DeNiro career to what it once was.

I'm loving it! This looks like what Wall Street 2 should have been. I just hope they don't make these guys too likable, as they should ultimately be some of the worst pieces of shit on the planet. Still this looks like a ton of fun.

Ok, that looked WAY different than was I was expecting

I can only say that, as a die-hard fan of Scorsese, however interested I was in seeing TWoWS 'then'...I'm 100% DEFINITELY going to see it 'now! I love it when one's expectations are shaken [in the good way] & revealed to be something completely different.

then again...it's only the trailer.

I clearly need a job...

Watching him throw wadded up hundreds in a waste basket out of boredom actually made me feel physical anger. Hearing his year-to-date income and how it disappointed him and how he made that every year...Ugh. Sorry, I normally don't get personal on JoBlo but was anybody else DISGUSTED by the heady excess displayed in the trailer? I know that the point is we should be kind of disgusted...I clearly need a job.
