Exclusive Scoop: The villains and costume of Spider-Man: Homecoming

05.20.2016

Potential SPOILERS, depending on your level of spoilage. Proceed at your own risk.

Chances are you’ve seen CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR already and chances are you enjoyed the hell out of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Hopefully you did, as Holland will again reprise the dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, the characters first solo venture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is currently set for release on July 7th, 2017.

Now, before I get into the scoop info, let’s recap what we already know about the film. It’s directed by Jon Watts with a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Watts’ last film, COP CAR, was an indie hit that helped grab the attention of the Marvel brass. Of course, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING stars Tom Holland as the titular character and is joined so far by Marisa Tomei as Hot Aunt May, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man/Tony Stark, Tony Revolori as Manuel, and Zendaya as Michelle.

Now that we’re all caught up, let’s get into the scoopage. Of course this info could be considered spoilery, so proceed at your own discretion, although none of it is really plot related, so there’s no story spoilers here.

Okay, good. So, you’ll recall the rumor that The Vulture would appear in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and that talks with Michael Keaton to play the character eventually fell through. Well, we can confirm that not only is The Vulture in the film, but he is, in fact, the main villain. But, he’s not the only bad guy in the mix. The Vulture will be aided by none other than The Tinkerer, who will help him build his suit with recovered Chitauri tech from the Battle of New York.

And speaking of suits…Although we’ve already seen Spider-Man’s new duds in CIVIL WAR, there will be some upgrades for HOMECOMING. We already know that Tony Stark will feature in the film and it appears he’ll be in more of a mentor role than anything, while supplying him with modifications to his suit. What kind of modifications? Well, if you stuck it out for the end credits of Civil War you got to see Peter Parker discover Stark’s costume Easter Egg for the web shooters that also featured Spidey’s signature signal light. Well, it looks like we’ll be seeing more old-school signature Spidey features, as Stark will also be supplying the classic Web Wings from the comics that will be able to deploy as needed. So, it appears Spider-Man is going back to his Stan Lee/Steve Ditko roots and that is pretty badass.

So, that’s what we have! The Vulture! The Tinkerer! Spider-Wings! Oh my! With the promise shown in CIVIL WAR, I can’t wait to see Marvel bring the MCU version of Spidey to the big screen in a solo venture. The more we see and learn, the more my anticipation grows. Another side note, the next top 10 list should be comic characters who haven't been done correctly and need another shot. There's a lot of fringe contenders like ghost rider, but in no particular order, venom, galactus, juggernaut, sabertooth (solid in Origins, but like Juggernaut, he could headline his own movie villain wise). Ultron. Kinda silver samurai and mandarin but I understand y they did that cinematically. Cyclops and colossus (better in deadpool but he's not always a boyscout).

Again there's a lot of fringe contenders, but I wouldn't use the F4 (tho yes to dr doom), BC the Chris Evans group was decent. I wouldn't pick daredevil or punisher, despite some have been bad. And I haven't seen Electra in the DDS2 (I have in her film), but I'd save picks for characters who have more of a significance in the comic world like a lot of the villains I named above. Phoenix? Gambit? Maybe blob? Sounds like apocalypse is gonna be on there. LOOOOTS of xmen characters. personally wouldnt put GL (he wasn't unwatchable), but Sinestro and maybe a LOT of Bat villains. It'd be a difficult list.

ANNNND another side note - Edwards Hulk movie is part of MCU right? Didn't Tim Blake Nelson start turning into the leader in that? It may be too late with Thanos on the horizon, but they should def add him. If not as a villain in whatever movie, then since most ppl have prolly forgotten him, tie him up with Gen Ross and do a Thunderbolts. How hard is that? Follow the last full run of thunderbolts, which was pretty great, with deadpool (the seller), punisher, black widow (other seller) or Electra, and maybe bucky or Loki. Have Ross turn into red hulk at the end. The whole thing would be off the bike. M
Hey marvel/Disney - holler at me. I can at least write a killer outline. Ok ramble over

I'm not bashing here, but what is the function of the web-wings? I guess they were before my time, but they seem more like a cool aesthetic design. Do they help him glide? That's cool, but it seems redundant with his webs. They can get him going at a great speed where he can basically glide until he needs to shoot another web. Just kind of a nitpick.

I do like that the tinkerer (?) is using parts from the chatari, or whatever they are called - the aliens who attacked nyc. From what I

I do like that the tinkerer (?) is using parts from the chatari, or whatever they are called - the aliens who attacked nyc. From what I saw, idk what would be useful except one of their hovergliders (did any just fly?), but it's still a cool idea and the first MCU film, to my knowledge, to take that approach, which is kind of off. I really liked that one shot where those civilians got an alien gun. I'm surprised more ppl haven't done that in MCu

Side note, with Thanos coming up, and wanting to destroy earth, won't a ton of "villains"also help to defend their planet? Ppl like vulture, abomination, maybe killian if alive, Ronan, yellow jacket, etc.? I remember in...secret wars maybe a lot of gangsters like kingpin sat around and watched the end until punisher came in and waisted them, but wouldn't the ppl with powers want to defend their loved ones/planet? If not for honor than a suicide squad thing? I know they don't have the rights, but I'd LOOOOOOVE an AXIS team up with like magneto, sabertooth, doom, carnage, deadpool, etc

yes...it's function is to glide because spiders can too.

it's not for speed but rather in case he falls or needs to slow down.

I'm still waiting to get Carnage on the big screen. If it was up to me I'd cast someone like Robert Knepper as Cletus Kasady and give the character a horror themed origins tale. There's so much that could be done with Maximum Carnage and his current comic run would make for a great sequel.

Maybe Rhyno/Jack O' [link] could get some good tech from Tinkerer as well

Meh. Totally underwhelmed by this entire thing. The Vulture is some old dude in a bird costume and "The Tinkerer" is beyond stupid sounding. Marvel's lack of a kick ass baddie who feels like some sort of actual threat continues. Oh, and Zendaya.

Agreed. I never wanted the Vulture in a film. There are so many better Spidey villains to choose from.

Agreed. Though I'd like to see Osborn eventually as he would make a good overarching MCU villain. He's the perfect fit for it.

Yeah I'm conflicted. I'm glad he's not the main baddie, but I'd love for him to become the Lex of the MCU. Or president, and make things difficult on everyone. Maybe even make his goblin gang. I hope there will be a shout out in the film of him running for office and how terrible he is. A rumor he killed someone else running. Maybe vulture did the hit. But I don't care to see him in costume now, just the crazy man in power

I still think Vulture would be more suited to secondary villian role but kudos to Marvel's for its continued attempts to distance itself from the first two live action versions as much as possible.

I do agree BC from what I know of him, he doesn't seem like much of a threat. I mean think of how powerful SM was in CW

Yes!! New onscreen villains!!!

Oh man, this is very exciting. I was so worried they would throw away Vulture as a side villain and focus on someone we have seen before. It sounds like they AXED the Kraven script, which was a great move because it sounds like Stark is filling in that mentor role that Kraven was originally going to be in (until he hunts Spidey for stopping the killing of Vulture).

So Tinkerer could be a fun side villain, he sure gets a lot of attention in the Spidey video games, usually being a big baddy
