Farewell Ebert & Roeper

07.22.2008

I'm a big fan of the term "end of an era." I use it all the time. When a Simpsons episode ended last week, I referred to it as the end of an era. When I was done pissing today, it was the end of an era. But this truly is, the end of an era. Today, Richard Roeper announced his departure from the wildly popular syndicated movie review show "Ebert & Roeper," citing changes in the show as the reason. Roeper replaced Ebert's late colleague Gene Siskel eight years ago and has done a stellar job since.

And later in the day, Roger Ebert announced that he too will be leaving the show. We all know that Ebert hasn't been on since 2006 because of health issues, and I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say the show hasn't been the same since (even Roeper said so). In a statement on his website, Ebert wrote:

After 33 years on the air, 23 of them with Disney, the studio has decided to take the program named "Siskel & Ebert" and then "Ebert & Roeper" in a new direction. I will no longer be associated with it.

Wow, the end of an era indeed. Here's the rest of the master's statement.

Two thumbs down to this news.

I really use to love this show, especially Ebert. That guy had more knowledge about movies that most of us put together. Although I didn't always agree with their reviews, I was glad when they drew my attention to smaller films that never got a lot of media and I would have missed had they not mentioned it. But if I didn't see a movie opening weekend I'd have to be careful as to not have it spoiled by these guys.

And my favorite guest host was this semi-hot female movie reviewer they had on a couple times. I always thought this show could use some more sex appeal. Just sayin.

Admittedly I don't usually watch the show, but I respect Roger Ebert immensely as a film critic (I did recently watch some of his banter with Siskel on YouTube).

The "Thumbs Up!" however is so iconic, especially with Ebert's name attached, that I feel this will definitely be some kind of milestone for my movie fandom. Can't say what all it really means, though.

Caught it sometimes

Why was this show only on at like 3 in the morning after a crappy rerun of fraiser? for that reason i don't care that the show got canceled but that doesn't mean they will stop reviewing movies.

Boo!

This sucks. I really liked that show. And when I couldn't catch it, all the reviews were online. I loved it because, while I didn't always agree with what they had to say, the back and forth was great. You could have one like a movie and another not and they would make points and counter-points. Much better than reading a review and being bombarded with one man's opinion.

And I like Roeper.

That show was really the only review source that I actually agree with most of the time (with the exception of that douche Michael Phillips). It's sad to see it go, but as Roeper stated they're probably gonna do another show that is exactly like it. I hope Ebert will be able to come back also cause him an Roeper are my favorite critics!

Ugh. This sucks. Hopefully Roeper will find another TV movie review outlet in the near future.

I'm also not a big fan of Michael Phillips. I'd have to say the best guest critics were Jay Leno and Kevin Smith

Farbersnikkel

Yes, Phillips is a total chode. I only know this from reading his blurbs on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ebert has been missed. He brings civility to the art of reviewing, when so much of it resorts to the level of name calling. Roeper was a good foil, and I wish him well wherever he ends up.

Best guest reviewer? Jay Leno. He isn't a huge film geek, so his reviewing was based on an audience level - which sometimes is the most honest.

michael phillips should die

Anyone but michael phillips (of the chicago tribune)---

I have been in chicago frequently over the last year and thusly have had the opportunity to read many of michael phillips reviews, and he is by far the worst film critic I've ever read ...

first off, I haven't agreed with a review of his until the dark knight, as he tends to give anything with an iota of pop appeal a horrible review.

Second, he's just an ass -- in every review where he pans the film, he seriously PANS the film ...

Second, he's just an ass -- in every review where he pans the film, he seriously PANS the film ... Often times using insanely negative hyperbole (not peter travers insane, but who is?) and often insulting all of the film business by saying moronic things like no one in hollywood cares about storytelling anymore.

And lastly,he seems to havbe a serious air of superiority, which is sad since he's just a measly critic, and all the worse since he is pathetically bad at his job.

That really sucks....Only thing is that no local station seemed to carry it at a scheduled time so you had to guess when it would be on and hope for the best. They really were top of their game, though.

Dang that treally sucks I really enjoyed the show. I loved the reviews and opinons but sometimes I do disagree with them. I do think they were two of the best critics. So it's sad to the show go.

Oh and I dug kevin smith when he was the guest!

Agree with MusicalPie

I absolutely agree with 'Musical Pie' about his review containing far too much plot summary, such as virtually giving away the secret from hancock. As a result i will ead his reviews of films i am on the edge about hearing, but since i live in the UK and TDK isnt out yet, i have held off on his review of it.
Rgardless whenever i could catch the odd Ebert & Roeper i found them enjoyable and hope Ebert recovers well

Sad for Ebert, Roeper is an idiot anyway!

AH too bad, no I'm glad because no more Roeper! He liked "Space Chimps!" you?[link] & here is them fighting because Siskel is a dumb-ass [link] I honestly think Siskel really didn't have a clue about movies & I could care less that he is gone. Try watching those clips so you can see what a real movie critic has to say, (versus a moron like Siskel) I will say that some of the guest critics were entertaining (Kevin Smith would be great if he weren't busy making some hit and miss movies. I

I still think "Jersey Girl" is underrated it's quite touching in places) Roeper will milk his so called "fame" from the show but people will soon see just how ignorant & clueless he really is. I would love to see JOBLO on a show, because he knows more about movies then the the really clueless Roeper!! I hope he never gets a big gig again. I miss you Roger Ebert and your fantastic & well written knowledge of movies, what have you done Roeper? Yeah...just about nothing, get a real job!!!!!

I never liked the show to be honest. I could never trust their reviews after a while, as it seemed like everything was "two thumbs up," or some sensationalist version of that. I'm not a fan of Mr. Ebert's written reviews either, as I feel they usually provide way too much plot summary (including what I would consider spoilers) than any real criticism. I hope Mr. Ebert continues to recover from his health issues. But I will not miss his show.

Favorite Host

My favorite guest host was pretty much the unofficial host, Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune. He gives good opinions and doesn't always agree with Roeper.

I really like Roeper, I hope he gets another show of some sort. I think he has a long career ahead of him.

two big thumbs down for disney.

In what new direction, I wonder, will the suits be taking 'Siskel, Ebert & Roeper' without Siskel, Ebert or Roeper?

$#!+.

Oh, well. Get well, Ebert...it's been a helluva run.
