Farley for DirecTV

10.27.2009

First it was James Dean selling long term investments, now it's Chris Farley selling satellite dishes? But while that first one was actually a pretty poignant look into the too-soon-dead actor's potential life, this TOMMY BOY commercial from DirecTV is just plain tasteless and both they and David Spade deserve the loads of scorn being hefted at them for this.

The same goes for whoever owns Farley’s likeness rights now, presumably his family. I can’t imagine they thought, “Oh I’m sure if Chris were alive today he’d want to be shilling overpriced cable that uses outdated technology.” What’s next, freaking Christian Bale selling a DVR while bashing Heath Ledger’s face in during the DARK KNIGHT’s interrogation scene?

Extra Tidbit: I've actually appreciated none of the ads in this campaign so far, offensive or not.

Horrible DirecTV Commercial

DirecTV = classy. Hey Dish, jealous? Sure there are plenty of dead celebs and people willing to sell them out for you too. Check this out: [link] Also a cool parody: [link]

not cool

Yeah, I agree with Tassi, the commercial was not in good taste. While it may have focused on Spade, a decent portion of the commercial utilized Farley to sell their product. Let those at rest stay that way, even if they were awesome.

hmmm...

I thought the commercial was more about Spade and less about Farley since it was Spade that pitched DirecTV.

It doesn't make it any better and all the commercials that follow this vibe are rather crappy.

Settle

I get to express my opinion, that's one of the many perks of working here. And clearly some people agree with me, even if they are the ones with all the thumbs down votes.

I simply do not think that dead celebrities should be used to sell products, I think it's exploitative.

Although I wouldn't mind if Billy Mays commercials kept running...

Yet you say that the James Dean commercial was a,

"pretty poignant look into the too-soon-dead actor's potential life".

Isn't that also exploitative by your standards? What about the commercial for Beatles Rock Band, where the band greets fans and holds the game's guitars?

I think you're more upset about this because you hold Chris Farley to a higher standard because you're a fan. I'm not saying that if you like the commercial you're not a fan, but people, yourself included, tend

I think you're more upset about this because you hold Chris Farley to a higher standard because you're a fan. I'm not saying that if you like the commercial you're not a fan, but people, yourself included, tend to love Farley to the point of absurdity and that causes them to say some pretty dumb things. Like I said before, get thicker skin. The backlash isn't because of your opinion, it's because of the way you present your opinion. It's almost as if you're lumping Farley fans into one big group of DirecTV haters. No one likes to be pigeon holed into a group just because they all happen to like the same actor.

Spade

I think the commercial was way more focused on Spade. I was afraid they were going to CG his lips to mouth some pitch for DirecTV. It's all good, I think.

what a whiney wasteful post

Really?...

remember how a lot of folks decided to take the twin towers out of shots after 9/11...the reaction was very knee jerk...and this isn't even important...

dislike of this is knee jerk...granted it is a commercial, but why can't david spade do this if mccartney and ringo can sell rock band games without john and george...

also, let's not forget Beverly Hills Ninja and Almost Heroes...i love chris farley shit to death, but come on, he had around an eight year career...

i say

Lighten up, Tassi. Seriously. I actually think the commercial is clearly trying to remember Farley in a nice light.

I liked the ad actually. I did. I like all of those ads. I think they are rather cool.

But DirecTV is an EVIL and TERRIBLE company that scams their customers into keeping them long term and adds unnecessary charges for their services.

They can't use a popular comedy film in an advertisement just because one of the actors died?

I really don't find this offensive at all...

Profit. Make money from your overdosed friend or family member. Why not? He doesn't care, wherever he is. Especially so, when the person took their own life... Its not like he died in a crashed plane... And I reiterate, he's dead, what does he care? I hope my family can make money off of my likeness when I am dead. What a way to support them!

Really?

Does this really qualify as noteworthy or a headline? I would expect dribble like this on AICN, but not here. Can we move on to something a little more relevant?

Seriously

David Spade said that Farley was one of his best friends, but the last couple years of his drug addiction made it hard for anyone to be around him. He would only be nice to Spade when he wanted money for drugs, and other times acted like a jerk (Spade himself said this, when explaining why he had distanced himself gradually from Farley prior to his death).

So let's not act like just because the guy's dead he was a saint. If I were David Spade and I had been treated like that I probably

After all, it's his film too, and it's not a tasteless commercial - yeah, maybe kinda weird, but it's not like they're pissing on his ashes.

So, you know, maybe grow up?

There's nothing offensive about this or any of the DirectTV ads. I personally think they are really good at conveying the interests of movie-buffs by having a little fun with some of our favorite movies. I really liked the one earlier this year with Naomi Watts & King Kong.

I never found anything offensive in this ad. I thought it was a fun revisit to a hilarious Farley moment. Yeah it's shilling DirectTV but this is frankly a pretty lighthearted ad.

And FYI, You're really not helping out your problem with the ad by posting it on JoBlo. It's drawing MORE attention to the ad and to DirectTV.

I would rather have my own personal Chris Farley to entertain me than either cable or satellite TV, so this advert certainly doesn't sell the product well to me! :)

Get over it. You sound like those people who protested Tropic Thunder because of the word retard. And if I recall correctly, Joblo ran several stories about how stupid those people were. Grow thicker skin or stop watching TV, movies, reading books or basically just living life.

That's not tasteless at all.

Just a good way to sell cable. I'm sure
Farley would like his family to make some coinage from his work. What's the problem with that? If he had given his family the money he spent on cocaine, he might still be alive.

I don't see how it's tasteless... Tommy Boy is a beloved movie, just as all of the other movies are that they use. Yeah, they are using it to sell Directv, but so what? I lean more toward it's honoring one of his more famous comedic scenes once again.

The content isn't bad, Farley would like knowing that he's making people laugh. It's mainly the fact that it's for Direct TV that pisses me off. Other than that, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Farley joked about his weight all the fucking time to make people laugh, that's what made him happy.

Really?

Really guys? This is tasteless? Give me a break, this is actually one of the least offensive things I've ever seen. David Spade may be hitting rock bottom, but there is absolutely no problem with this commercial, and it actually irritates me that people actually think of this as tasteless. It's a hilarious scene, from a funny movie, and you see Farley for 10 f*$(%*g seconds. Quit making a big deal out of it.

Dont understand the hate over the commercial

its one of the funnier scenes in one of the few movies he did. i see nothing at all that disrespects farley in the commercial. Directv has done this with plenty of movies with this ad campaign, are they supposed to ignore all the movies that involved a dead celebrity? i love that scene. glad i can see it during football games now. im sure farley would want people to see his work as much as possible too.

I just had to log in to voice my opinion on this. I thought it was HILARIOUS!!! Stop being such stick-in-the-muds and enjoy it for half a second!! This is not offensive to Farley at all! Coming from one of his biggest fans of all time here, I think he would've found it funny. You guys are probably the same people who picketed the opening of TROPIC THUNDER because of the Ben Stiller fake trailer. Get over yourselves. Who cares if it's Direct TV or Tide or Lean Pockets...whatever!!! No
