Favs-less Iron Man 2?

06.12.2008

Update: Nikki Finke of "Deadline Hollywood Daily" does a little reporting of her own and says Marvel has made Favs a handsome offer and has no intention of dumping him from the sequel. Read more about it HERE.

Jon Favreau Yipes, things just took a severe turn for the worse for the upcoming IRON MAN sequel.

Earlier today, we told you about Jon Favreau voicing concern on his MySpace blog that Marvel's proposed 2010 release date for the sequel would be a little too rushed to deliver a quality product. In that same post, he also mentioned the following: "Itís been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and Iím sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2." Five weeks and just one phone call? Something's not right about that and the folks at the IESB have recently uncovered the reason behind Marvel's reluctance to re-negotiate with Favs. Put simply, they just don't want to.

Given the overwhelming success of IRON MAN, a large part of which hinged on Favs' creative input as director, he understandably expected to be able to re-negotiate a more lucrative deal with no objection from Marvel. Apparently, he was wrong. Marvel doesn't think they need Favs for the sequel to be a success so they seem to be contemplating just dumping him and getting someone else. As of now, they're denying it, of course, and claim that negotiations are ongoing but IESB's source seems to be pretty solid. Once again, yipes. Read more about it over HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Perish the thought, of course, but should the situation arise, who do you guys think could replace Favs?

NOT THE END OF THE WORLD

Relax guys! Even if Favs doesn't return, we can hold out hope for the great Brett Ratner!!! HE CAN DO NO WRONG!

oh yeah, except for Rush Hour, Money Talks, Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, X3, Prison Break, The Family Man, and Red Dragon...but seriously, it's not like anyone really noticed...

The only reason Id let this go is if they get someone else to do Iron Man 2 so that Favre can begin work on The Avengers. But that the only reason.

ugh

I hope that this turns out to be just a BS rumor. I really don't want to believe that Marvel is stupid enough to try the same old crap that they tried to pull with X3.

Favreau sure has something to do with the quality of the first film but as long as they dont hire Brett Ratner I dont think it would be such a big deal if he didnt come back.

People should have a bit more faith on Marvel Studios.

Tim Story, Ang Lee and Brett Ratner were not Marvel faults nither there decisions. Marvel had no control over those movies.

Ironman and Hulk are the first Marvel Studios movies and so far I'd say they've done a great job.

They chose average directors, but great actors, and fan oriented scripts. The outcome has been 2 of the best superhero movies in a long time.

Plus unless you worked on Ironman you can't be sure how much of the creative decisions actually came from Favreau or how many came from Marvel, the actors, or were already on the script.

Chill out, Marvel Studios have done a great job so far and I'm optimistic about Ironman 2, no matter who directs it

I really hope ...

...this does not come to pass. It's a little early to jump to conclusions. However, at this point Marvel Studios should be bending over backward to kiss Favreau's ass while shining his shoes and filling his pockets with ten thousand dollar bills. It's about quality, and that can't be rushed.

If that means pushing back the Captain America & Avengers movies then so be it. (Unfortunately I think Thor's fate is sealed, and they should skip introducing him until after his appearance in the

If that means pushing back the Captain America & Avengers movies then so be it. (Unfortunately I think Thor's fate is sealed, and they should skip introducing him until after his appearance in the Avenger's movie and not before.)

They need to invest in their future as a film company and it's properties, and not try to "strike while the irons hot" and make a quick buck (no pun intended). Otherwise we'll end up with another X3 on our hands. Yes it made money, but it failed as at being a good comic book movie and basically killed the X-men team's movie franchise for years to come (Wolverine: Origin doesn't count, he's solo. I'm talking team).

Hopefully they will get their heads on straight.

Once they do hire him (for the price he's asking) they need to give him even MORE creative control on the sequel.

Lastly, if you want to voice your opintions to the source go to Marvel's message boards over here:

A word of warning though; it's a more kid friendly site so no profanity, or you'll get booted.

THANKS FOR AN AWESOME IRON MAN MOVIE FAVS!

No Favreau = Failure

Favreau made Iron Man an AMAZING movie and if he isn't a part of it...then Marvel Studios is just there for money and not for the fans. I think that they should just be smart about this and wait a bit. I know we all want a sequel, but I want a GOOD sequel. I don't even want to think about Favs not doing this.

Sugarontop

I agree with the rest here. we need to give directors more credit.Jon Fav was the one who hired Robert Downey, was the one who hired Industrial Light and Magic for the visual effects, Stan Winston for the practical effects, Adi Granov for the character design. Yes, he did a lot so I don't want a Brett Ratner to take over.

YIPES INDEED...!

I didn't really enjoy Iron Man as much as I wanted to, but I agree that Jon Favreau is the one responsible for its phenomenal success. Take him away and Marvel can spell 'disaster' all over their foreheads. On another note, IF I could choose ANYONE...and I mean ANYONE to helm the next Iron Man, it would be Christopher Nolan. We've seen what the man can do in that film...errr..what was it called...Batman Begins. Oh and there's that other Batman sequel coming out soon...Dark Knight? The Dark

How come people aren't giving credit to the directors anymore? When was the last time an EP really made a movie what it was? The EP hires the director to make the movie "work" and Favs also wrote/worked most of the scenes. Marvel is just cocking the gun and resting it on their foot...

Harry Knowles has just posted his view of this situation over at AICN if anybody here wants a read. He's right on the money.

Overall, I think the honchos over at Marvel Studios are about to get their asses handed to them over all this shit.

Hell No!

If Marvel does not bring back Jon Favreau then this franchise will just be another wasted oppurtunity. The movie ONLY DID make $100 million in 3 days and Favreau ONLY DID a hell of a job at making Iron Man one of the best comic book movies of all time. If they are smart they will ask him to come back to direct Iron Man 2 but hopefully they won't rush the movie only to make it "sub-par".

What's next? Christopher Nolan quits the Batman franchise?

Of course the director matters, sugarontop! He was responsible for the entirety of the amazing film! Marvel has figured out that people loved the first one and think that people don't give a shit about directors, so they can throw in some hack and people will still see it.

It would be shockingly foolish if Marvel didn't want to have Favreau back. He made Iron Man the success it was. I guess we'll wait and see, but I would be disappointed if Favreau didn't return and I doubt Marvel could pull out a great replacement. Tim Story maybe?

Uh, it's not as if the director of Iron Man is some grand auteur whose style shall be a hugiant loss to the overall pic.

Calm down, fanbois, calm down. If not Favreau, then another capable director. Now, if they seek to replace RDJ, you should all start crying for real. But they won't. Why? Well, he brought something special to the screen. Fav just directed capably.

jumping to conclusions

JoBlo, settle down. Marvel, as Fav's said, has their hands full with Hulk. Marvel's pretty new at this game and they aren't dumbasses. This isn't Entourage. They realize that Fav is a part of it, they do listen to sites like this and notice people like us and our concern for a Fav-less sequel, so he will be back, as long as he doesn't be a dick in the negotiations.

Unexpected

Well, I think it's pretty crappy for Marvel to dump the guy after he did such a good job. On the other hand there's really no excuse why they shouldn't be able to bang out another good flick in two years. They've got plenty of source material to salvage through to come up with a story. As far as finding a replacement for Favs. I think there's plenty of directors who could get the job done, and some who could do it even better. Like Shane Black, Renny Harlin, Antoine Fuqua.

Normally I'd be pissed off. But so far Marvel has done 2 "independent" movies (Ironman and Hulk) with average directors, and they were both amazing.
Marvel is betting the success of these movies on there skills, writing the script, casting stars, and choosing the director and they might be right.

They've got it right 2 out of 2 so far and there's a lot of other directors out there with similar or more skills than Favreau

Until Favs is clearly not coming back. I will wait to comment. If he doesn't come back it looks like he got the same treatment Dick Donner got the Salkinds after Superman the movie came out, Hopefully the Marvel producers will gather their toughts and bring him back. SO much of the film's succes seemed to come from Donney jr. and Favreau's collaboration. Not a good idea to change that

You know, this is not that bad of a deal. Iron Man was an exceedingly average movie. The entire time I was watching it, I felt Favreau's underwhelming directorial style was to blame. The guy can't direct action scenes and the final battle was dull as shit. The only thing it really had going for it was the casting of Downey Jr. and Paltrow. They played so well off each other and had great chemistry, when she wasn't on screen or when Downey suited up...the movie lost something. I think the bigger

I can handle them dropping Favs in favor of someone who can handle balancing character with action without one outshining the other.

It's not a smart move. I had always wondered why they didn't sign up Favreau the moment they decided on a sequel, but I' optimistic that whatever is going on is just deliberations before rehiring him to direct a sequel.

Seems like movie studios would have figured out that when they change directors of a successful movie franchise it usually end with a sub par movie. Tho i guess they know people will still go and watch it so they don't care. Tho i wouldn't think a 3rd would be as likely in that case,

Hopefully this isn't true. I thought Iron Man was great and would love to see it continued by Favreau

they know better

Hoping that this isn't a bit true, I think they haven't started developing IM2 because Hulk is as important, if not more, as IM, so they probably want to take care of the Hulk press and promotion first and then turn their attention to IM again, plus they know when they have good directors, Bryan Singer & Sam Raimi are a little example of that, so I don't think they'll do that to Jon Favreau, their just focusing on Hulk now.

avi arad...

honestly, favreau did an above average job with iron man, and most of the films success should surely lay on his shoulders. Not to say someone else couldn't have done just as good, but what's more likely is someone else would have done far far worse. Like DD and Ghost-Rider, and FF, and the other slew of marvel stinkers. The problem for me has always been Avi Arad. I see this guy talk about these projects, saying they're amazing, best script ever, best director ever, etc... So much

So much exaggerating, which is part of his job sure. And then someone can say "well if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have all these super-hero movies." Is that the bright side? We wouldn't have so many half assed versions of our favorite Marvel characters on screen??? Heave forbid!!! Fire his stupid ass (if possible) and undo his bullshit business antics. And don't come back with how much these movies earned as an arguement because clearly we the fans will see any shit they put out at least once to satisfy our curiosity. Asshole Avi Arad.

Stupid Move

They need to sign him up for 2-3 more films like the Raimi deal. Marvel doesn't need to become the next Lion's Gate and start screwing over quality Directors etc. I'm also with BobaFett on this one, RDJ seemed to work perfectly with Fav why mess it up? RDJ is IRON MAN and if he isn't happy with it and walks, I won't see the next one with out him in it.

Are Avi Arad and George Lucas both going to the same sauna at the moment and they got to talking?

What the @#$%ing hell is wrong with Avi Arad? First, he derailed Spidey 3 by forcing them to add Venom's entire story AFTER production had started on a Venom-free movie.

Now he wants to ditch the guy who made a (let's face it) B-List superhero a huge success?

And don't even get me started on the FF movies...or X3...or Ghost Rider...or Elektra...or...well, you get the idea.

Ridiculous

I guess it was too much to believe that Marvel was making all the right choices with the start of their own studio. Great casting, great script writers, great marketing choices, INTEGRAL director for IM... I'll honestly wait to rent IM2 if they sub out Fav and vote my opinion by taking away from box office results as best I can.

No surprise to me!

I was wondering when Avi Arad's greed, short-sightedness and massive ego would kick in.

Well...here it is folks.

Cheap Bastards!

I hope this turns out to be BS,'cos if Marvel are intending on changing directors they are truly scum-ridden money whores. The profit Favreau has just made them and they can't up his wage packet??? Sure they're right (If it's true) they don't need him to have a successful part 2, 'cos the people who've seen this one will go to the next, but if the second one sucks, they can look forward to a huge flop with the third if it even gets that far!!

WHAT?!?

Hope this is untrue. Kinda makes me worried about Hulk even. For once I thought Marvel knew exactly what they were doing.

This sounds like a mistake.
