First look at Aquaman's Black Manta rises to the surface in new pics

06.14.2018

At long last Entertainment Weekly has given us our first look at the deep sea pirate and mercenary David Kane, a.k.a. Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) from DC Entertainment's upcoming AQUAMAN. Known as David Hyde in the comics, the character became obsessed with the idea of killing Aquaman after the deep sea Justice League member murdered Hyde's father on the assumption that he'd killed the Atlantean's father, Thomas. Determined to see Arthur Curry a.k.a. Aquaman pay for his actions, Hyde began crafting weapons and armor that could destroy his nemesis.

You can take a look at the first pic of Black Manta below:

“He’s part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit will look like some crazy alien from outer space,” director Jame Wan said, confirming that Black Manta is one of two antagonists featured in the upcoming film alongside Aquaman's half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson). "Black Manta is a really interesting character who is somehow factored into this story, but our main story is about Jason and Patrick," added Wan.

When Wan's AQUAMAN washes up into theaters Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world. The highly-anticipated superhero film stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Patrick Wilson as King Orm/Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta, and Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry.

While Warner Bros. has yet to reveal a trailer for AQUAMAN, Warner Bros. honcho Toby Emmerich says "The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before." Meanwhile, our own Editor-in-Chief Paul Shirey witnessed a work-in-progress AQUAMAN trailer at CinemaCon several months ago which sounded pretty rad, but I'd imagine that no amount of praise will get fans pumped until we all see the footage with our own eyes. Thankfully, AQUAMAN sounds like a superhero film worth getting very excited about, so be sure to check back when the official trailer drops.
