Strike Back below!
by: Paul Tassi Dec. 11, 2009

Read no further if you don’t want Sigourney Weaver to possibly ruin a big surprise in the next GHOSTBUSTERS movie. Unfortunately, it’s my job to read spoilers so let me just say DAMN IT SIGOURNEY! Ah well, I still love you.

In an interview with the UK’s Channel 4 (via AICN), Sigourney let this little nugget slip about Bill Murray’s character, Peter Vankman’s appearance in the new film.

"I might be in it; I see nothing wrong with being in it, although I don’t think I will have a big part. I think Bill Murray has a little more to do with it - (whispering) he’s a ghost."

Oops!

Ah whatever, I’m sure this is something we find out pretty early in the movie, and if it is true, I think it’s actually a pretty cool way to bring the character back. What about the rest of the team? Could they all have died in some stream-crossing accident and now return as ghosts to mentor the new class of Busters? Not a bad idea if you ask me.

Extra Tidbit: I'm hoping for an Apatow-less cast for the new film.

Depends
It could be a good idea, depending on how they play it. If he's just a ghost, but otherwise exactly the same, it's rather pointless. But if he's just trying to fuck with everybody and they have to "bust" him, that could play out very interestingly, because who would want to stuff their friend in a canister? DRAMA!

Could be bullshit? Maybe? Eh? As long as the center the movie around Murray, or just have him in most of it, I'm ok with that.

What the motherfuck. I've been a fan since I was a kid Sigourney but what the hell?

Somebody get the Delorean. We're going back to 1991 and we're going to ruin the end of Alien 3 for everybody. Maybe it will drive the box office down enough that we'll all be spared 'Resurrection' and the AVP movies.

No surprise
This shouldn't shock anybody. The script Ackroyd and Ramis wrote for Ghostbusters Go To Hell had Venkman as a ghost. Pretty common fanboy knowledge.

I don't wanna see ANY of the original GBs as a ghost, especially Bill Murray's character.

Venkman becoming a ghost would be like turning Sigourney's Ripley into an alien, such a ridiculous notion that it could never hap..........oh, wait...

I think this could be interesting. On another note, I love it when someone tries to insult another persons intelligence but can't spell for crap. (See AmazSpiderman1 below)

I actually remember reading a looooong time ago (just a few years after Ghostbusters 2 came out) that this was the only way Murray would be willing to return to the series. I guess only time will tell how it plays out.

Another thing.....
Thinking a bit more on this whole Venkmen being a ghost idea. I wonder if he and the team figured out a way to temporarily be dead/play dead and interact with ghosts. The movie Flatliners comes to mind. Anyway, perhaps Sweaver meant to slip that "secret" to get people thinking Venkmen is a ghost throughout, to raise some eye brows, build buzz, see fan reaction. The movie Flatliners comes to mind. Anyway, perhaps Sweaver meant to slip that "secret" to get people thinking Venkmen is a ghost throughout, to raise some eye brows, build buzz, see fan reaction. Whatever. I believe it was a ploy. The movie could start off with an opening scene where he is a ghost, perhaps baiting other ghosts to be trapped. And then his team brings him back to life at the end of that scene.

Ideas run crazily through my head all the time, especially with this movie coming eventually.

CG Murray Ghost
This is one of those scenarios where they'll bring us a younger version of Mr. Murray, whom we all recognize and love from the Ghostbuster series, at least a 90's version of Murray. [Of course, as I noted above via computer generated images.] No offense to the beauty of aging. It'll still be Murray acting and it'll be a surprise to many to see younger Murray on screen. [Of course, as I noted above via computer generated images.] No offense to the beauty of aging. It'll still be Murray acting and it'll be a surprise to many to see younger Murray on screen. Eerie, but that's the point because he's a ghost. And I'm all for Murray creating more chaos at the station than helping out. I also think his ghost is a great way to somehow link our world with the hellish dimension we all want this movie to enter.

Lastly, I agree with the Paul Rudd comment. Good eye. Him or Jeremy Piven.

I would almost agree with the Apatow-less notion if not for the fact that I really think Paul Rudd would be the best possible person to play a Venkman type character for the new team.

In regard to "I think it’s actually a pretty cool way to bring the character back"....your officially an idiot. If that's the route they are going, this movie will be terrible.

i think its likely bill murray as a ghost would make fun of the situation and pester the team just for kicks! i like dr_fruitness' idea about the whole cross dimentional thing, and venkman being flesh and blood in another dimention using the videogame story as a bit of a stepping stone. i am really looking forword to this!

I think that would be interesting. It's also possible that if they go with the whole parallel New York idea then perhaps Venkman would be a ghost in the real world and when they cross over to the other side, he's flesh and blood. There's lots of whys they could go with this but I like the idea of using ghost Peter as a tool to explore the origins of the ghosts.

it'd be fun if venkman haunted his own proton pack so he can bug whoever 'fills his shoes' now, and if they went cross dimentional, he could take the proton pack back and use it for old times sake. i wonder if slimer and him will have a go at eachother... can a ghost slime another ghost? lol

this reminds me of the Michael J Fox movie The Frighteners where he was helped by ghosts. This could be a cool idea, but it would probably be the last Ghostbusters movie then. As far as it being written by the guys who did year one I haven't seen that movie but haven't heard good things. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm with JohnLocke. They should scrap the idea and let the Ghostbusters be. In addition to the reasons JohnLocke gave, the script is being written by the writers of Year One. No thank you!

I'm just not sure
..but if anyone could pull it off, it would be him. The rumor has been around for a while that Venkman was going to be a ghost, so this sort of confirms that. Still you never know, it could be Sigourney reporting what she has heard like the rest of us. She keeps going back and forth weather she's going to be in it or not, just like she did with the video game until she decided she wanted in...

It was written by two of the writers of the American version of The Office. There still is no green light on a new movie, but yes there is a script. But it's Ghostbusters, and I'm for it :D

a GB3 is a bad idea.... period. They're too old and they're not gonna wanna come back. A new "crop" of Ghosbusters sounds terrible since it's the chemistry from the original group that made them so great for me.

OLD RUMOR IS OLD
This rumor had been around for like a decade and was from the rough GB3 script that Dan Aykroyd wrote because Bill Murray didn't want to do GB3 at the time. I think they've realized by now that this is terrible idea.

With all the BS, time and I'm sure boat loads of money, its taken to even get Murray to talk about coming back, can anyone really see him coming back to the story as a ghost? That makes no sense to me. I think its all a smoke screen to keep people talking about the movie.

This was one of the contractual obligations for Murray's return. This is merely confirming it in a way. But it's been known for sometime Murray was to play a ghost Venkman.

I cannot believe you are for Bill Murray being a ghost. It sounds worse then passing the torch. The only way it would work is if they did it like Bill Cosby in Ghost Dad. Which would have Venkman still alive, but it ruins the first two films to have him die in the third.

I guess I don't understand all the hate for this. I don't think GB3 should exist at all, but if it has to, I think this could be a cool way to bring some of the original cast back. Not sure why everyone thinks it's such a travesty.
