Giamatti's Babylon

In the pantheon of cinematic odd couples, there are some real doozies. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in TWINS, Tom Hanks and a volleyball in CASTAWAY and perhaps the most twisted of them all, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in MR. AND MRS. SMITH. Yikes.

Well move over guys, y'all are getting a new neighbour. Paul Giamatti has just been cast to star alongside Anthony Mackie in the indie film BABYLON, which starts shooting this February in Jamaica. Mackie will play a Rasta from the isolated hills of Jamaica and Giamatti will play a British minister, both of whom accompany a 12-year-old Jamaican boy from the Kingston ghetto as they try to outrun gangsters. Like I said--odd pairing. Ian Stone wrote the script, and Andres Baiz (SATANAS) will direct. Not exactly a high profile production here, but the daring choice of casting as well as what seems to be a very human story should bode well for a film that I think has some serious potentioal.
Extra Tidbit: Mackie can next be seen as Tupac Shakur in the Notorious B.I.G biopic NOTORIOUS.

I'm confused by Luke's comment. I mean, Giamatti only just won an Emmy for playing America's second president. And it's not like he's really ever carved out a niche category for himself.

While casting him as a British minister IS pretty inspired, I think the pairing of Paul Giamatti and Anthony Mackie makes perfect sense, as both are actors who made their names in the indie circuit around the same time (though Mackie isn't as well established yet). So no, this isn't one of those odd pairings

I Giamatti already very good cinematic odd couple movie. Him and Thomas Haden Church were excellent together in Sideways.

I'm sure this will be good, as he rarely disappoints. I actually like everything he has been in.

Man, Giamatti kind of got screwed over there. He was making quite a name for himself for a few years, but then a couple of his films bombed (Lady in the Water, Shoot Em' Up, Fred Claus, etc.) and now his profile seems to have really dropped.
