Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to be Disney's first 4K Blu-Ray release

100%

I personally have mixed feelings about James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. However, even I can't deny how visually stunning and colorful Marvel's latest interstellar sci-fi sequel truly is. Yesterday, James Gunn announced via his personal Facebook page that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is inline to become Disney's first Blu-Ray to be presented in 4K Ultra HD.

Here's what Gunn had to say in his post:

"Yes, it's true, & I am UNBELIEVABLY EXCITED to announce that, after a couple of years of me begging and pleading, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be coming to home video in 4K UltraHD. It will be the FIRST Disney release to be released this way.

4K UltraHD is almost certainly the best way you can see this movie at home - with more definition and the most vibrant colors possible on your home screen, and with the brightest brights and the blackest blacks. A being composed of light truly appears to be a being composed of light! This version is a roiling cinematic river of beauty and I've taken hundreds of hours personally making it look the best it can. This is one of the reasons why LIGHT and COLOR are such important elements of Vol. 2's story, and why we screened the World Premiere in Los Angeles in essentially this format.

And yes for those of you asking, there will also be a 3D home release.

We will soon have lots more exciting announcements about the home release and some unbelievably cool additional content, including something that's so amazing I've been chomping at the bit for months not being able to talk about it!

So more OFFICIAL announcements soon. Be careful what you listen to if it doesn't come from here or Marvel Studios as sometimes things seep out into the world from artwork that isn't finalized, etc.

And have a great Wednesday. Love to you all."

And there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth! Now, as cool as this news is for fans who enjoy 4K Ultra HD presentations, you'll notice that Gunn didn't give us an official release date to go with all of that hype. That being said, the smoke on the street is that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 will land on shelves beginning on August 22nd, but again, that has not been confirmed just yet. As for me, I'm content to own the regular-ass Blu-Ray and not much else. Maybe I'm just out of touch, but the 4K presentation makes me feel like I'm on-set when watching it, and that's not what I want. I want that sheen, that veil between me and the cinematic world I'm experiencing. It's my preference and I'm sticking to it ... until the day when I no longer have a choice, that is.

How about you? Do you dig 4K Ultra HD, or is the regular Blu-Ray presentation enough for you? Let us know in the comments section below!

Fantastic

4k all the way for me , what they failed to mention is that 4k version of guardians of the galaxy will also be released in dolby vision, which is a superior HDR format that Disney was waiting on.

4k all the way. I still don't have a 4k tv. saving for a worthwhile 80" 4k TV. But every 4k blu ray comes with a blu ray copy anyways. So for 2-3$ more, you future proof your collection. Sort of a no brainer.

True, but like records, there will always be physical copies for the collector.
