HBO and IMAX have made a deal that will make Game of Thrones the first television series to appear on the large-format screens. It's been announced the final two episodes of season 4 ("The Watchers on the Wall" and "The Children") and an exclusive season 5 trailer will screen in 150 IMAX theaters for one week, starting on January 23. The episodes will be digitally re-mastered for IMAX, and tickets will go on sale "in the coming days.”

HBO chief marketing officer Pamela Levine on the screening:

The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format. We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.

It's certainly an interesting way to help promote the upcoming new season of Game of Thrones, however even with the screening featuring a season 5 trailer, I'm not sure how many people will want to fork over the cash just to watch two episodes of the drama series on the (very) big screen. Are you going to check out Game of Thrones in IMAX theaters later this month?

Season 5 of Game of Thrones is expected to premiere on HBO in April 2015.
