How about... zombies versus knights?

10.22.2010

Seems like a lot of classic monster archetypes are omnipresent on the big screen lately, but zombies still mostly seem to be relegated to filling stores' bottom shelves with low-budget DVD junk.

Maybe a high concept will give the shamblers a fair shake. Rebellion and 2000AD (who are pushing the new JUDGE DREDD movie toward screens) and upstart Amber are working on STRONGHOLD, which finds a group of medieval knights battling an army of undead.

The movie is being adapted from Paul Finch's book, and will mark the feature directing debut of Jason Kingsley, a longtime videogame developer.

Here's the breakdown of the book: When King Edward I of England built Grogen Castle in Wales, he proclaimed it the strongest fortress in the British Isles; impregnable to assault, armed with devices so fiendish that would-be attackers would die in multitudes. But the Welsh have had enough of English tyranny. Armed with druid magic and an ancient, mystical artifact, they summon an army to their banner even the most superstitious of Edward's soldiers could never have imagined. Soon, Grogen Castle finds itself besieged by forces forged from splintered bone and rotten flesh. Just how long can this Stronghold hold out against the zombie horde?

Extra Tidbit: Shades of ARMY OF DARKNESS? Sure, please.

I'll watch it; if it's better than 80% of the schlock I watch it's a winner. BTW Terminal's "zombie vs special ed" idea sounds pretty appealing, the parallel of the brain dead fighting the dead... could even call it Brain Dead. I think I should get writing.

I'm willing to give it a shot,

it sounds like a fun idea for a film, and not anywhere close to Army of Darkness. And I can live with more vampire, werewolf and zombie movies . . . if they're done well.

I'm sick of this BS

Maybe since it's from a book it will be good, but I'm damn tired of zombies, werewolves, and vampires too. Unless it's Kate Beckinsale, then why am I watching? I guess it's better than another vampire movie anyways

I'll see this if they get Bruce Campbell to play Edward Longshanks.

eh?

To say that zombies still seem to be relegated to filling out bottom rung DVD shelves is absolute horseshit.

There's pretty much been a continuous stream of zombie movies since around 2003 when Land and Shaun came out, and that seems to be continuing with Brad Pitt buying the rights to World War Z and all the upcoming stories on the Pride & Prejudice and Zombies movie.

If we took into account video games as well I think it's safe to say we're genuinely being OVERRUN by zombies...

I'm talking major theatrical releases. Seems like there's a new vampire movie every few weeks. How many people saw PONTYPOOL, REC2 or Romero's recent attempts at the theater? The last "big" zombie movies were ZOMBIELAND and the RE movies. Beyond that was 2004's DAWN remake (and 28 DAYS/WEEKS, if you count them as zombie movies). Everything else is still in development. So... maybe one big zombie movie a year. Not what I'd call swamping the multiplexes with zombie movies, so I don't get when

I love the genre, but there's not a ton of satisfying big-screen content. I stand by my initial comment.

Well going by that, RE was still released within a month or so ago, Zombieland was only late last year.

The vampire genre only really has Twilight going for it (also Let the Right One In), unless you're counting Cirqu de Freak, Lesbian Vampire Killers and Daybreakers as MAJOR theatrical releases that people rushed out to see.

You add them all up and they're at the very least on equal par at the moment. It's just that Twilight and True Blood are just getting all the publicity at this point
