James Cameron says Avatar sequel delayed until late 2017

AVATAR 2 was set to hit theaters in late 2016, but according to James Cameron, the sequel has been pushed back until late 2017. While at an event in New Zealand to help promote the local film industry, Cameron said the "very involved" writing process for the film is the reason why it will now be released in 2017. The director also says the plan is to finish the scripts for all three planned sequels by the end of this month.

There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film. We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments.

AVATAR didn't really do much for me. While the visuals in it were fantastic, I was disappointed with the story and characters. But I'm still going to check out the sequels, and I'm curious to see what James Cameron will do with them. Are you bummed AVATAR 2 has been pushed back until 2017?

Couldn't care less......

Could someone show James the article about Lucas taking time away from film-making? Seriously, the hardest I will ever laugh in my life is if his "Blue Aliens good, humans bad" craptacular dies in the very first film.

Can you imagine the backtracking when they know they've paid for three and each will make less money than the last?

Avatar is a fascinating phenomenon to me

I enjoyed the first film as a ride and an exploration, I don't really care for it anymore. I don't care for the sequels AT ALL and no one really seems to care about them... Yet, I still have this feeling he's taking his time to synchronize the new trilogy with some new technological gimmick... like, it will be the first glasses-less 3D cinematic release or something.

He's a master of finding ways of attracting audiences, regardless if his films are 'meh' or great. I mean, I would have never

The first one had great visuals with a horribly written story, so I really don't care. Sounds like he just wants to dodge the big marvel / dc movies.

But it was still a good watch thanks to those visuals alone and the sort of "theme park" exploration of an alien planet. It was a unique experience, imo

The funny thing is they essentially made a Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves in space and now they see how hard it is to come up with and write an actual original story.

I remember the love this thing had when it came out

People went nuts over it. It was even up for Best Picture and people thought it had a chance. It was an event film but no way in hell did I want it taking Best Picture.

No one cares anyways. Aside from the pretty visual effects, the first movie was awful and very forgettable.

So in keeping w/ Cameron's original "1 sequel per year" scenerio...

That would see 2019 having "Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2", "Star Wars: Episode 9" & "Avatar 4" all in 1 year.

The respective "end" to 3 major franchises. (Ok, may not "Avengers" exactly...but DAMN! 2019 is looking like *franchise central* now.)

I wonder if the fact Zoe Saldana is now tied up with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and maybe (hopefully) one or both of the Infinity Wars will cause any problems?

I think he doesn't care

There really is no urgency from him to get this or any other movie done. He seems more interested in pushing the technology behind the films and using the money generated from that to fund his sea excursions. Which is fine, but whatever.

Anyone else concerned that, I don't know, NO ONE WILL CARE about Avatar anymore by 2017? For such a high-grossing movie, it sure faded from public consciousness damn fast. I can't name a single person who's clamoring for more Avatar, much less three sequels that are still over two years away.

Give him as much time as needed.

James Cameron can't really do any wrong. I just hope he moves in towards more original storytelling instead of redoing Dances with Wolves. I want to see these other worlds, these other creatures and see what other types of avatars can be created.

So it'll probably be another ten-plus years again before we see his next one, right? Just like last time. And people wil pay out the ass to see it because...I dunno, tradition?

The Last Train For Hiroshima

wow, I thought I was the only one, but apparently many people do not care of Avatar anymore... what happened ? Too long time ? A so-so story ? I dunno...
Maybe we feel a little disappointed by those Avatar sequels cause, like Nolan, we expect from such a director to come with something very new and unexpected at each movie to amaze us....
I hope he will make a few other projects he has : Battle Angel and above all : the Hiroshima movie....

I really wish we could see something different from him. Titantic and then Avatar ten years later, I want something new, not more Avatar. I didn't care for the first one and probably won't see any of the sequels.

I loved Avatar, it was a great visceral experience even without the 3D (I actually prefer the non-3D version). But I'm not sold on these sequels. What more can you possibly tell? I'd much rather see Battle Angel.

It blows my mind...

that this movie will make a billion, everyone will see it, but no one ever really seems to give a crap that it's coming out.

I enjoyed the experience of Avatar in the theatre, but i don't even remember it anymore.

lol, maybe... but I am prett sure it won't...
I know in America 3D is getting out of date and I heard more and more people choose 2D over 3D versions, but in Europe, people are suckers for 3D movies.. My multiplex used to propose the 2D version and the 3D version of a movie, but not anymore : it's 3D or nothing I was in Asia a few month ago, and it is the same thing
