James Cameron's Avatar is officially returning to theaters on August 27th

07.08.2010
We reported on this back in March, and it's interesting to see how much the announcement polarized readers, with some digging the idea of getting a chance to see it on the big screen again in 3D (with new footage), while others called it a George Lucas-like move. Ouch.

In any event, it's officially official and the date is set: August 27, 2010. By this time next year, Cameron will be able to afford to build himself f*cking Atlantis.

On August 27, return to Pandora and re-experience James Cameron’s History-Making Epic film, with more than Eight Minutes of Never Before Seen Footage- exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX® 3D. Since - and largely as of result of - AVATAR’s release last December, the number of available digital 3D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3D, as well as fans that want to return to Pandora again, will now have that opportunity.

The Oscar® and Golden Globe® winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

International Re-release Schedule:

BELGIUM - 8 SEPTEMBER 2010
RUSSIA - 26 AUGUST 2010
SPAIN - 17 SEPTEMBER 2010
UK - 27 AUGUST 2010
AUSTRALIA - 26 AUGUST 2010
INDIA - 27 AUGUST 2010
JAPAN - 16 OCTOBER 2010
SOUTH KOREA - 16 SEPTEMBER 2010
MEXICO - 15 OCTOBER 2010
ARGENTINA - 16 SEPTEMBER 2010

I still haven't seen it. I'm waiting for it to be re-re-released at Christmas with another 2 extra minutes on top of the 8 new minutes of footage.

I'm Down

AVATAR is one of those movies where to get the full experience you have to see it in IMAX 3D. So for that reason I am seeing it again in August.
It's still the best 3D movie ever.
And the 8 extra min. are nice.
The 2 gentlemen below me are correct.

I still just don't understand the mindless hate that this gets.

Nolan re-released The Dark Knight half a year later, does that make him a greedy "lucas-like" bastard as well? And that re-release didn't even have new footage.

I guess I'm an a-hole, but...

I'm actually excited to see this again. I'm fully aware that the 8 minutes is nothing more than an excuse for more money, but I'm fine with that based on what I'm getting in return. I have told friends that watching 'Avatar' on their home screen is akin to watching a video of a roller coaster ride. Sure you get the idea, but you miss the experience.

Can Cameron move past TITANIC and AVATAR already and make something new, instead of having us wait around for another 10 years? Bah..

I saw it, I enjoyed the experience, rolled my eyes many times at some horrible one liners, now I'm over it, I don't need to see this movie again and if anyone was planning on seeing it in the cinema and failed to do so has no excuse, it only played for 4 months..

I would have seen it again if it hadn't lost it's screens to alice and Clash, now I can see it again, with extra footage. All good news for me.
It was still making piles of cash when, through limited 3D screen numbers, it got chopped short. All they are doing is giving it the full run audiences wanted, but now with some extra footage.
Ohhh evil Cameron! He's coming for your souls!!!
Prepare!!!
Oooggy boogy!!

Um.

I saw it 3 times in the theaters the first time, figuring that I wouldn't get the chance to see it again. I'm not down with a re-release and won't be seeing it a 4th time in 3D, especially so soon. But I must say if I was James Cameron, I'd be like, "Yeah just put it back out there, another couple mil won't hurt."

Why does every comment have thumbs down?

Is Avatar that near and dear of a movie to some people that they directly oppose anyone that sheds even a minuscule bit of negative light on it? There is no other legitimate excuse for this re-release than greed. Plain and simple. If Cameron said he was using all of these proceeds for the Gulf or some shit, I would be fine, but this is solely to fatten his and Fox's wallets more than they need to.

And it's not even that great of a movie either. People can like it for the special effects, the experience, the message, whatever, but I'll judge it as an actual film. This was Cameron's ego going out of control, thinking he could make a great film with just great special effects, while the story is hackneyed. Hopefully this movie will be one of those that doesn't stand the test of time and we'll look back on it only being popular "because of the special effects".

I think people just like going thumb-crazy on any Avatar-related article. I respectfully disagree with your opinion though, sir. Avatar was an event, just like Star Wars, E.T., The Godfather, Alien, etc., ALL of which have been re-released many times, because that's what the people want. Just because you don't like Avatar doesn't mean this is an example of Cameron's ego going out of control. Look at its box office intake...do you really think people were just tricked into seeing it? No, word of

The thing about all of those re-releases was that it was at least a year until they were re-released. Avatar is getting re-released only EIGHT MONTHS from being released and only four months from the DVD. There's also gonna be the REAL home release that's in 3D and loaded with special features, so there's MORE money to get. Cameron's pupils have turned into dollar signs. Also, (I know this has been said NUMEROUS times before) the amount of money a product makes doesn't reflect the quality of

And to Kilar, being only nineteen and in college, it's kind of hard for me to find a job that pays on salary. I know why Cameron is richer than me and that's obvious. Plus, if he loves the environment so damn much, then maybe he should do something with all of that money of his.

I guarantee that if they release the movie wide enough again and with more footage and 3D, it will make a shit-pile more as I know tons of people who never got a chance to see it in 3D and wanted to.

This is an insanely smart move on Fox and Cameronís part. Avatar will once again exceed everyone's expectations (like it did every single weekend of its first release) and make a shitload of money. I know plenty of people who have either seen Avatar at home on Blu-ray or DVD, or havenít seen it at all, who would love to see it in 3D on the big screen. Hell, I saw it twice in Digital 3D but every time I tried IMAX it was sold out, so Iím definitely seeing it again. Not only for the extra footage

Oh, and for those of you saying this is "greedy" and "unnecessary," um...isnít EVERY SINGLE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE greedy and unnecessary? Itís a business, dudes. You donít have to get so mad about business people doing business and making money. Just like any other wise business, they see a market gap and try to fill that gap in order to make profit. And as for the extra tidbit, maybe we should make Wal-Mart and Microsoft pay for the oil spill, too? Sorry, but BP is solely responsible for that shitstorm, and they should pay for it. End rant transmission.

People complaining about this have no fucking idea what they are complaining about.

Every time a film becomes a phenomenon, it gets re-released. Some were even re-released multiple times. Star Wars, Raiders, E.T., Psycho, Gone With The Wind (which still gets limited re-releases), etc...

To complain about this is just stupid, especially since the film was still pulling in large audiences, and screens were still selling out when Avatar was yanked out of theaters. Just because you have some

AVATAR YOU ARE KING AND ANSWER TO NO ONE

The IMAX 3D experience vs the blu-ray experience is vastly different. Where blu-ray gives you clarity and crispness, IMAX 3D give you a worldly invitation of real motion and incredibleness.

I don't hate Avatar, I quite liked it. However, re-releasing Avatar and Titanic just to make even more money after the ton of money they already made, is simply greedy and pathetic. The worse part is, people will actually go and see it again.

Eh...

I think people are largely Avatared Out.
Anyone who loved the movie saw it lots of times. And everyone went out and bought the DVD/Bluray.

It's been Avatar saturation.

I won't be seeing this again in the cinema. Whilst a smart business move, I am pissed that I paid for a 'Special 2 Disc Edition' blu ray to find it was the film on a blu ray disc and a dvd disc. Not a single special feature. You cheated me out of money there Fox/Cameron. Doubt I'll rebuy one of the million rereleases heading our way come xmas either.
